Ruki was not soft.
As the vocalist of an internationally renowned visual kei Japanese rock band, Matsumoto Takanori was a lot of things. He was amazing, gorgeous, sexy, and virulent. He was the picture of dark masculinity, and featured in the NC-17 fantasies of thousands if not millions.
Grudgingly, Ruki would admit that by certain standards, he could be called short.
But he was not soft.
Regardless of the fact that behind the scenes he could be smiling and sweet and play around with his bandmates like they were a pack of puppy-dogs, and setting aside that he was bright and cheerful for the cameras, or that he was honest and earnest with his fans, no matter how deeply down you dug, beneath all of the piercings and tattoos and make-up, Ruki was not soft.
It didn’t matter that he was holding a cone of soft serve ice cream in one hand and a small orange kitten in the other. It didn’t matter that he had been holding both for nearly twenty minutes now, keeping them safely out of the rain. It didn’t matter that he was waiting, or that he would continue to wait for as long as he needed to. None of it mattered, because Ruki was not soft.
His too big sunglasses, all but unnecessary for the grey afternoon, covered most of his face and hid his expression. Only the firm set of his not-quite-pouting lips was visible and that turned quickly to an all-out scowl when he got a text message from a very nosy bassist saying that Ruki was such a sweet softie at heart, waiting in the rain like this. How Reita had known was beyond him, but that didn’t make Ruki feel any better about it. Ruki’s expression remained scowling for another five minutes, softening only when the breathless figure of a girl came into view out of the grey.
She was completely soaked through. Her short black hair was plastered to her face, tendrils of it collected together and dripping moisture in steady streams. Her clothes were sodden, clinging to her figure in a way that even looked uncomfortable and her high heels were slung over her shoulder as she tramped through the puddles to where Ruki was waiting.
Maki’s expression was cross. Her chest was heaving with exertion and she was shivering. “I couldn’t catch him,” she huffed when she’d come within easy earshot of the singer. “He made it onto the train and I couldn’t catch him.”
Ruki sighed. He shifted the kitten in his arms and tossed the ice cream into the nearest waste bin. There was no way he was about to let the already freezing girl make herself colder with an icy treat. Then he transferred the kitten into Maki’s arms and shrugged out of his jacket, tucking the pre-warmed black leather around her shoulders, and taking her high heels from her in the process.
“Taka-chan!” Maki protested loudly, trying to get the vocalist of the GazettE to pay attention for once. “What are we going to do about this little guy? We can’t just abandon him like that guy did!”
Ruki readjusted his jacket around Maki’s shoulders as she tried to wriggle out of it. She might have been most concerned about the kitten in her hands at the moment, but she was always his first priority. Tucking an arm tightly around her waist to ensure that Maki couldn’t escape from the warmth she needed, Ruki began to tow the actress out into the Tokyo downpour.
As answer to her repeated shouts of protest, Ruki said simply, “We’ll take him home with us.”
“What?”
Matter-of-factly and in the most teasing and manly way it could possibly be done, Ruki explained, “It’s cute and fluffy, and it needs a place to stay. I’ve already let one stray kitten invade my apartment, there’s no reason I can’t let you have a little friend. Koron could certainly use company during the day.”
The teasing smirk he wore hid the displeased resignation he bore the furry creature at the moment. He didn’t want to adopt a kitten. Ruki liked how clean he kept his apartment and he knew that having a cat around the house would make a serious dent in his efforts. Having his little Chihuahua running around was more than enough to deal with. But that wasn’t important at the moment.
Right now he needed to get Maki somewhere warm and safe with a change of clothes and a hot shower, and the quickest way to do that without making her horribly angry with him was to simply take both her and the kitten to his apartment straight away. The exact details of keeping or not keeping the fluff ball could be sorted out once Maki had a hot cup of tea in her hands.
Besides, the kitten was awfully cute. Thinking that its defenselessness and big green eyes demanded endearment was not a sign of softness. It was merely a result of being sensible.
“Stop looking at me like that,” Ruki grumbled. The instruction was meant for both Maki and the kitten in her arms, as both were staring at him with the sweetest and most admiring expressions he could have ever dreamed of. He shifted uncomfortably, tugging again on Maki as he tried to lead her home. “Come on, let’s get you two out of the rain.”
Regardless of the fact that his heart fluttered as Maki tucked herself against his side, and setting aside the fact that his cheeks warmed with a pleasant mix of pride and embarrassment as she murmured into his shoulder, “Arigatou, Taka-chan,” the truth still stood.
Regardless of it all, Ruki was not soft.
