The Only International Album

You know how there's music wherever you go, and sometimes you recognize it and sometimes you don't? And you think that everyone-- whether they're from California or Japan or Austria or Cape Town-- will know the Beatles when they hear them, and at least recognize the da-da-da-duuum of Beethoven's fifth symphony.

There's one album that I think has gotten around the world more than any other: Paul Simon's Graceland.

Besides the fact that its sounds are multinational, I've heard the tracks playing in more hotel lobbies and greasy spoons and dives than anything else, from the Beatles to Bach. When Simon sings, "I'm going to Graceland, Memphis Tennessee," it seems like he goes everywhere on Earth.
