The kohai and I had a wild day yesterday. We installed the new VCR and then she travelled into the Village with me so I could see my shrink. After shrinking, we decided not to go to TES. Instead, I wanted to run errands and this turned into an impromptu date. We had dinner at (where else? I'm so romantic) The Famous Original Cozy Soup & Burger, on Broadway at Astor. It happens to be in the same building as my psychologist, which is NOT why I picked him! Meat. Blue cheese. Oof.
At dinner she presented me with what I'd asked her for, two new packs of Sarasa pens.
Now with pens, you need notebooks. And for me "notebooks" means "Moleskines!"
We went in search of them. First to St. Mark's Books, and then we walked down Third Avenue to the Bowery. Turning right on Bond, we stopped and paid our respects to the Gene Frankel Theater, former home of TES. Then we turned left on Lafayette, left on Bleecker (to get a glimpse of CBGB's) and right on Mulberry. We crossed Houston and walked around three sides of the Puck Building with E commenting on how ugly the little gold dancing cherubs were. Then we turned on Jersey Street and right again on Mulberry walking past the original St. Patricks, and past St. Michaels where an Eastern Orthodox funeral mass was read for my father after he died. (My dad wasn't Orthodox but the priest, a friend of the family was, so...)
Then we went to this cool bookstore on Prince Street called Mcnally's or Mc-something. This store has moved--it used to be old and all burnished wood--I remember going there as a kid after Dad's funeral and buying "The Silmarillion" there cos I had just finished "The Lord of the Rings." I remember I also bought Ray Bradbury's "Dinosaur Tales" and wanted Agatha Christie's "Cat Among the Pigeons" but my Mom didn't want to spring for three books. Oh well. That's where I got my new notebooks. Mission completed!
Anyway getting back to our walking tour, we walked west on Prince, crossing Broadway. Stopped at Morrison Hotel to look at the photos and pay our respects to the artists photographed. Then we walked down Wooster St. (I think?) and turned right on Spring--I was going to the tobacconist to buy a new lighter. He sold me a Phoenix cigar lighter for $20 cash. No I'm not saying which tobacconist but I'm a 'good customer.'
Doing a 180, we went back up Spring and turned left going north on West Broadway. Crossing Houston where W. Broadway turns into LaGuardia, we saw a crowd gathered. There were two kids on the corner of Bleecker with U2 albums: The crowd was gathered to see Bono coming out and getting into an SUV. We both got a glimpse. Silver framed orange lensed glasses, white cowboy hat, black leather. The man himself. After that we were blown away. We walked through Washington Square Park, and up Broadway two blocks to the 8th Street Subway where we had emerged so many hours earlier. Tired, we went home and watched the second half of Wagner's "Das Rheingold" on E's VCR. All in all a very nice impromptu date and a classic NYC "Celebrity Sighting."
Sometimes it pays to decide not to go to TES.
