The Return of Ulysses (or three days without the InterWeb)

Put Something In

Draw a crazy picture,
Write a nutty poem,
Sing a mumble-grumble song,
Whistle through your comb.
Do a loony-goony dance
'Cross the kitchen floor,
Put something silly in the world
That ain't been there before.

These words by Shel Silverstein seem a good way to start an LJ post on a morning when I'm feeling inspired thanks to the timely return of the World Wide Interweb. My cable modem was fried for three straight days and a tech finally came over and gave me a new one. Good old Time Warner.

In music stuff, went on Saturday night with citruscommando to see Joe Satriani at the United Palace Theater (Reverend Ike's) with Mountain as the opening act. Mountain were both awe-inspiring and fucking deafening. They played a set which included renditions of Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King" and Bob Dylan's "Blowing In the Wind" along with the ubiquitous "Mississippi Queen." Great Satch set featuring "Time Machine", the new song "Andalusia", and a gorgeous "Flying In a Blue Dream."

The other fun thing with Satch is that his sidemen tend to rotate. The current tour features regular drummer Jeff Campitelli and bassist Stu Hamm, who took a solo that featured a multi-part five-string version of Led Zeppelin's "Going to California." Now 52, Satch remains a consumnate musician and a a great entertainer. If you don't believe a guy with a guitar and no vocals can kick your ass, go see him and find out. The encore was "Crowd Chant", "Summer Song" and then a two song blues jam with Joe, Leslie West, and eventually John Petrucci from Dream Theater. Yay. Afterwards we went for Dominican steak. Recommended!

Even though I was out of touch (or at least felt isolated) I was able to keep up with my fantasy football this week. The Night Owls pulled another win in their three game rampage, bringing the team record to 4 and 3, above 500 and just on the edge of the playoffs if other people keep losing and I keep winning. Playing the 10th Avenue Freeze-Out this week in a crucial division game. With the Denver Broncos on bye, I managed to upgrade my team, trading away interception-prone backup QB J.T. O'Sullivan for some guy named Peyton Manning. We'll see if this move works out. Or not. Also upgraded my defense and made the risky addition of injury prone Houston cornerback Dunta "I'm Not Even Supposed to Be Here Today" Robinson. Which could be a goldmine pick, or a cut in two weeks. We shall see as my players start to come off of IR.

Getting mentally prepped for BR and looking forward to the event. Wrote an outline for the class and now have to fill it in. Kinky mad libs! Got green_kohai's registration transferred to my bud motorhead5 and we will have a good weekend down there with some needed out-of-ny time for both of us. BR is exhausting but I'd never miss it. Well, I did once but that was in '04. Anyway.

Going to the Philharmonic tonight and taking Em as she has the evening off. (yay!) They are doing Brahms' Third Racket Symphony, and a few other works. Review to follow on superconduct0r which you can subscribe to right here on LiveJournal!

OK enough commercials. It's good to be back!
