My first cookery lesson at secondary school was how to make a hot milky drink. I forget which kind of drink that was. I'd been doing much more complicated cooking prior to that, but the vague memory of that class has just come into my mind.
I love adding spices to things. (Note to Americans: I'm not talking about herbs.)
Hot sweetened milk with cinnamon.
Last night I mixed up a mugful of skimmed milk powder with water, added a pinch of ground cinnamon, two tabs of sweetener and a tsp of brown sugar. (Very sweet, I know!) I heated it in the microwave and stirred. It was really lovely. Kind of reminded me of breastmilk but with added cinnamon. I had it in bed before 10pm.
Pot of coffee with a spice of my choice.
Today: a pinch of dried chilli flakes in a big pot of half-caff, served black without sweetener.
Other days: half a 3" cinnamon quill roughly crumbled in with the coffee grounds.
For the future: freshly ground cardamom seeds to be added to a big pot of coffee (inspired by
artremis).
(I make my coffee in a cafetière/french press. This would also work with a drip coffee machine.)
