For those who eat grapefruit, what method do you use to eat it? Do you slice it in half then tease out the segments with a knife then a spoon, or do you peel and eat it like you would an orange? Do you use some other method, and if you do, please tell me what it is.

I was wondering.

I love sniffing grapefruit in the supermarket. Mmm, citrusy.

You have just reminded me of the awesome special grapefruit knife that my parents owned. I don't really eat grapefruit unless I have a special knife to slice the flesh away from the pith.

I find it easy to prepare a grapefruit, if a bit fiddly. I wonder how much easier it is to do with a special knife... I suppose if that's what you're used to then I can imagine you'd be reluctant to use a somewhat inferior method.

I think I just don't buy grapefruit very often so haven't had the occasion to cut it with anything other than a grapefruit knife! Maybe I will now...they're so tasty...

But the knife certainly helps. It was an old bone handled version of one of these. I imagine my parents found it buried in the garden rather than bought it (they found a lot of old cutlery in our garden) as neither of them ever ate grapefruit.

Oh! Also! I like to sprinkle my cut halves with brown or demerara sugar, and then place it under a hot grill for 30 seconds or so. That way the sugar caramelises and the fruit releases loads of extra juice.

I've only ever used those two methods; I don't know of any other. My preferred method is to halve it and then use the knife-spoon approach. Sometimes I use icing sugar instead of caster sugar.

Not had one for ages though - might get one on my way home tonight.

Grapefruit are probably my favourite fruit. I peel it like an orange, then I carefully remove each segment from its surrounding pith and membranes before eating it; the membranes are much tougher than they are on an orange and it ruins my grapefruit pleasure to eat the fruit with them on. I never add sugar. I don't like grapefruit to be sweetened.

I make a huge grapefruity mess and get very sticky doing it. It's fun.

I cut it in half, sprinkle it with sugar and messily slurp it with the semi aid of a spoon.
