So smoking in a non-smoking area isn't ... illegal?

No it isn't, it was a sort of please don't smoke sort of area. It's illegal to smoke on buses and trains (and maybe other places) in England and Wales. It is illegal to smoke in enclosed (can't think of word - buildings maybe) in Scotland, and that will extend to England and Wales next year. Yay!

I think I would be too if someone challenged my dress. Why shouldn't he have been wearing a suit?

It was 11 at night, I was pretty drunk, and I couldn't think of much else to say. I didn't much care what he was wearing or why he was wearing it.

Over here in Canada, if suit 1 was caught smoking in a prohibited place (which is just about every-freaking-where now) he would have gotten himself a big fat fine and a big fat lump on his head from being thrown out the door.

Good to get to chat with you. Sorry some other bits of the evening were unpleasant. I suspect others looking after BU and/or the bar staff could have helped remove the smokers rather than you having to put up with them. Glad you weren't going to hit someone in an argument and a little worried that others may have thought the argument was / could turn nasty.
