Vito was at the same cafe where he'd first met Janie -- had it really only been a few weeks ago? It seemed much longer in some ways, shorter in others. She had said something about wanting him to meet Lynn's father, and Vito was curious about him anyway.
So, on Saturday at the appointed time, he went to the cafe and ordered a cap and biscotti and took over a booth near the window, once a small crowd of hipster kids vacated it. He kept an eye on the door while he flipped briskly through a copy of the Times, giving brief notice to a mention of the girl in Morningside Park the other day. One suspect in custody, but evidently he hadn't talked or there would be several more, by now.
Vito considered pushing to get the case transferred to him. He had a little pull with the captain, after the whole Dr Browning incident, and he suspected he could crack it without too much effort. Wasn't sure what would come out of the shell when he did, though ...
He added sugar to his coffee and shook his head. Too many serial killers targeting women, that'd always been the way. But Janie was safe, Lynn would be safe at St Dom's, Nica could take care of herself.
