Because her job was at night, Janie spent most of her days sleeping, and that's what she would rather be doing on a Saturday.
Instead, she was being dragged around a carnival by her twelve-year old, who was smart enough to wait until Janie had been drinking to lay a guilt trip on her. She was never around, always working, the fact that they'd abandoned family in order to move to the city. It didn't end until she relented, and was at the nearest carnival, holding a handful of tickets and an impossibly large cone of pink Cotton Candy.
Lynn, her daughter, was spending money at a game, getting frustrated at losing. Janie had warned her that carnival games were rigged, but the child didn't listen.
The noises, smells and colors all were almost too much as she stood there waiting, waiting for her daughter to finish so they could get back home and she could sleep.
"Mom, we're getting funnel cake." said Lynn, grabbing the sugar cone from Janie, and pointing to a long line in front of what looked like a trailer.
"...Another line? I have to work tonight, dear."
"We HAVE to. Right now! Mom you promised! We never do anything together anymore."
She felt guilty enough that it worked, and she stood in line, trying to figure out how many tickets to give the girl.
