White House working to trade A-Rod to Afghanistan for Bin Laden
The White House is reportedly looking to make the biggest deal of baseball's hot stove season, sending Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez to Afghanistan for hiding terrorist Osama bin Laden. Former team owner and current U.S. president, George W. Bush, is looking to complete the deal to complement the recent acquisition of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.
"We want Osama and we want him bad," said a White House source. "We think he is the final piece we need to meet our goals for 2004."
The deal is said to be contingent on whether or not the U.S. will pay part of A-Rod's $252 million contract. "We are trying to rebuild a country here," said Afghan President Hamid Karzai, "and we can't absorb a huge financial hit like that. But, of course, we could use a big attraction like A-Rod here to bring some excitement and shift our image away from being the home of the world's most evil person."
The other barrier to the deal is A-Rod's no-trade clause, which President Bush could override with an executive order. "We'll see what happens, but I don't see us okaying a deal to Afghanistan, no matter how good it would be for our country," said Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras.
