[Follows THIS, THIS and THIS]

Vee was grateful for at least one thing: no matter how fucked things had become, Matt still gave her warning of when he was coming home. Especially when she had promised to get them fish dinners and have them here ready for him. And she had, but then there had also been a lot of candles to set up, and music to put on. There was also the unwrapping of certain express post items, and emergency waxes.

Vee put on a black silk robe over the top of her surprise for Matt, and tried not to fidget too much. The outfit that Euan seemed to deem worthy of jerking off too was fucking uncomfortable. While she was no stranger to thongs, thongs with feathers that still managed to tickle the wrong places were another story. Then there was the bra. Her breasts felt like they were being coddled by baby ducklings, and Vee didn't find it particularly sexy. She just had to hope Matt did because she really, really needed to make up for her emotional, and devious, shortcomings.

She heard him start to come in the door, and did a quick final check of her hair, and make-up before she went to greet him with a smile. The black robe was still in place, and she stretched up to kiss his lips softly. "Welcome home, Detective. Can I take you coat?"

Matt hesitated just a little as he pulled his scarf off and placed his keys on the table beside the door. "I got it, it's fine," he told her, unable to wonder why she had suddenly wanted to play doorman. He shot her a smile and unbuttoned his coat, shrugging out of it and hanging it on his coat rack. It had been a long day. In comparison to Gee and Evans, his own case load had been somewhat predictable, a lot of waiting on evidence and meeting with witnesses, not really proceeding any further with anything. He caught wind of Gee's new case, though, and put two and two together. But by the time he managed to get through to her department on the phone, she had left work for the day and Evans wasn't taking any calls. Not that Matt knew the younger detective that well, but he was going to try and at least give him a little pep talk to help him. Matt remembered how it had been when Ronnie's neck was on the line, and even though direct murder wasn't involved, it still hurt and still made him feel sick in the gut.

Now he was home again and he had been contemplating taking a bath, which he didn't do often. Now and again, though, he liked to indulge to try and relax all the tired muscles. He usually ended up falling asleep in the bath, though, so maybe it wasn't the best idea. He still wasn't completely sure where he stood with Vee, and hadn't managed to analyse it a lot in the last few days. They just seemed to go about the days without visiting it again, and as far as Matt knew, Gee was getting on okay with her new house guest. Everything seemed to be okay, for the moment, but he did still have that slight apprehension that deep down Vee was like she had been when she pulled that stunt all the time.

Virginia's teeth caught her bottom lip as she watched him, and stood there with her arms hanging loosely by her side as she waited. The nerves were starting to build up, and she wasn't sure what was going to happen tonight. She knew they'd spoken very little about them, and she was in her second month of staying here. One more month and she would know if this was going to go anywhere. There was still an idea in the back of her mind to move out into a hotel for the last little bit, see if maybe putting a little space between her and Matt would get things right again.

Only she was selfish, and she liked waking up to him. Especially on the few mornings when things were right with the world, and his arms were tight around her. She reached out to take his hand and started to lead him backwards to the kitchen where their semi-romantic dinner was set up. "How was your day, Irish?"

"Strange," Matt admitted wryly and followed her into the kitchen as he loosened his tie. He had to wear one for the latest interviews with a little old Christian lady, he and Ronnie knew it was important to make a good impression to get the info they wanted. Matt was of the opinion, though, that it just made them look like Jehovah's Witness and not polite Catholic lads. "Gee and her partner have just gotten themselves into a very sticky case that could lead to heartache, if it hasn't already. I hope Euan knows how to be a shoulder to cry on," he added and then raised his eyebrows again. "You didn't have to go to all this trouble. Any special occasion? Did I miss your birthday?"

"Well, yes, but that's not the point. It's not as if we're up to birthdays, is it? We only just survived Christmas. I'm alright with the day passing with no fuss. There's more important things to worry about. As for the trouble, I did have to." Vee guided him to one of the empty seats at the small table, and poured his beer. She then took the tie off him completely, and kissed his cheek. "Euan will be a reluctant one, but he's not a complete prick. If she needs him, he'll be there for her. As long as it's not me urging him to do it." She took the seat across from Matt and frowned a little. "Gee's heartache, or the partner's?"

Matt looked up at her in disbelief. "When was your birthday? Why didn't you say anything?" he asked, slightly bewildered. He wasn't sure if he should be offended or not that she hadn't told him, even if he did feel like a wanker now to hear he had missed it. Once again, that feeling they had slipped off the same page niggled in him. Maybe now they had been staying together this amount of time, stuff was just coming out to indicate it was maybe not the best idea? He was confused about it all. Sometimes it seemed great, and they enjoyed each others company, but he had felt behind the eight ball with her ever since the Euan fiasco. He looked at the beer for a moment and then cleared his throat. "Her partner's, but it will be hers by default. They've become close."

"The eighteenth, so technically you haven't missed it. There's still a few hours left in the day. Even I didn't realise what day it was until I was, um... Getting the post." Vee held up her hand and tried to stop his brain in its tracks. She could see where he was probably going with his thoughts. "I didn't tell you because I really don't want to make a fuss. I'm just another year older. It's okay. We can celebrate it later. I called my parents and had a big chat to them. They're Carolina and Neil, by the way. So you can see where my Mom got her love of naming kids after states. Her great grandmother started it. Her Mom was Helena, and her mother was Antonia after San Antonio believe it, or not. They saved the best for me and my Mom. My Dad's the blond in the family, that where I get this," she said as she pointed to her hair. "Two blond cops in one family. Good, huh? He's also where I get my emotional retardness from. We've never been a particularly emotionally expressive family. I can deal with most situations, but relationships I'm still lost in. Arrangements like the one I had with Euan were easy because being partners meant we'd already shared everything. I've never had to share things with someone who didn't already know. I got straight A's in school, which I realise is kind of amusing since I can be a total dipstick sometimes. I made out with the quarterback in the middle of the field once. Also might have fucked him on that same field before leaving him there naked, but that's another story... I like green better than red, I will always be a black coffee drinker, and Adam Sandler doesn't make me laugh, but Will Ferrell does. Although since being here, I do quite like Billy Connolly."

She took a breath, and gave him a small shrug before clearing her throat and focusing back on Gee and her partner. "After the initial misunderstanding you were telling me about? That's good. Means they'll be better partners. I'm sorry to hear they've got a case that threatens one of them so early on, though. I hope it'll be cleared up."

Matt took a small mouthful of his beer, swallowing and then licking his lips. "All of that spread over the time you've been here might have been appreciated here," he pointed out with a smile. "Thrown at me like this makes me feel like you want the same in return and I'm a bit slower on the uptake. I still find it a bit weird that you didn't mention your birthday, but to each his own. Now are you really going to tell me what tonight is about if you apparently forgot your birthday?" he asked her with a smirk. "I still feel like I'm missing something here. Has something happened? Did you explode my favourite pair of shoes, shrink my favourite shirt?"

"I'm not sure it's going to be easily cleared up. Stuart's... boyfriend, lover... he's being questioned for a murder. I don't know how it all went down. I couldn't get hold of Gee and Stuart was unavailable. Dealing with someone you care about under the spotlight is horrible," he said with a small shaking of his head.

"I know, and that's what tonight is about. For once, I'm really not expecting anything in return. I'm not doing this to be selfish. I'm doing it because I want to apologise, and make it all up to you. My birthday gift, if you feel like giving it, would be forgiveness and a chance to show you I'm really not a feral bitch I came off as for a little while there. Matt, I care about you. A lot. I never wanted to hurt you, or your friends. Please believe me, baby." She moved out of her seat, the robe parting to reveal one of her smooth, tan legs as she rest her knee between his legs and leaned down to kiss him, this time more deeply, and rougher than the kiss she greeted him with. "So how about you unwrap your gift first, Irish?"

She pressed a tender kiss against his forehead. "Shit, that's definitely a tough situation. I honestly couldn't imagine it. I assume the guy's innocent? It really is going to be a heartbreaker if their evidence so far is pointing towards the lover. I hope they can clear him."

Matt just found himself laughing slightly and shaking his head. "You're giving me a complex. I can't keep up with you." He held his hands up in surrender and then pushed his fingers through his hair. "Okay, okay... look... just, I don't know, I thought we were just seeing how things went here? You don't need to make anything up to me. Fair enough, I was shocked at what you did and it made me doubt some things, but I didn't ask you to leave. I don't have any intentions of doing so, either. You just need to understand that everything that happened came like a huge smack in the face for me. It threw me off and wasn't sure how to deal with it. I got worried that I'd made a mistake just making decisions based on a few days of sex, and I have to be honest here, I'm still a little uncertain about that. That's why I said I needed some time. Is trying to make it up to me with sex the best idea? Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I just want you to know that jumping into bed... I'm still going to need time to adjust to all this," he told her, hoping she wouldn't be offended. It wasn't lost on him that she had gone to a lot of trouble here, but he was still Matt Devlin and still played his cards close to his chest.

"I don't know anything about the case. I just still hope that your best pal has it in him to at least listen if she needs to talk because she won't offload onto Stuart if she thinks he's already in pain. I mean, how would you feel if Euan got hauled in for murder, but you knew he was innocent?" he said, trying to put himself in either Gee or Evans' shoes.

Virginia nodded and kissed him lightly again. "You can take all the time you need. I give myself a complex, so I don't blame you. I never wanted to smack you in the face like that, and I'm sorry. Believe me, I'm sorry. I know we're seeing how things go, but that doesn't mean I can't make it up to you when I do do something unbelievably selfish." Vee shifted to sit on his lap and picked a chip up off the plate to offer it to him as she smiled. "I'm making it up to you with a few of your favourite things. And sex is... a mechanism to remind you why I'm here. I know I'm not here purely for sex, but you have to admit we do do intense discussions followed by sex extremely well."

"I would feel like I'd been torn apart. I would be wondering what the fuck I did wrong. Or what he'd done to deserve that kind of treatment. I'd be finding it hard to concentrate, and just have a burning need to prove him innocent," Vee admitted. "And I do still think Euan can take it. He's never not stepped up to the plate when required."

Matt tilted his head in consideration, his eyebrows raised in thought. She had a point there. He hadn't actually denied the sex at all, not even when things had been rough between them. He hadn't been able to do it after his operation, but there had still been whatever they could manage. Maybe that was another slight cause for analysis in his head. Could something long-term and stronger be based on hot sex? He had never been in this situation before and he wasn't about to start discussing his sex life with Ronnie. It had just been a little thing stewing in his head. Things seemed to stew in his head very well, but he had always been like that. It's what made him the detective he was. He accepted the chip off her and chewed it thoughtfully, washing it down with a sip of beer. "Do I expect a sexy silky corsette under this robe? Maybe some nice suspenders?" he asked, tugging lightly on the sash.

"Just bear in mind, I might have to belt him if he doesn't come through for her. You placed them in this situation by default, I trust you can vouch for his skills," he added.

Vee watched his mind work, and smiled wickedly when he finally seemed to accept the situation and started to tug on the sash. She pushed her fingers through his hair and kissed him, tasting the beer, and a hint of salt from the chip on his lips. He really hadn't denied the sex the whole time she'd been here, and she was grateful. To her it was a comfort, and a sliver of hope that maybe things weren't so strained between them that they couldn't work it out. She laughed softly and leaned back to give him a decent view of her body once the robe fell open. "Not quite a corset or suspenders, but I'll keep those in mind for next time, Irish." The feathery bra and g-string were revealed in their full glory, and she bit her lip as she waited for his reaction.

"It's duly noted, and I will definitely not try and stop you. But he can pull through for her. I know he can," she replied.

As much as Matt wished he was able to stop it, he put a hand up to his mouth to try and stop a burst of laughter escaping. For a few moments, he just tried to absorb her lingerie, his blue eyes wide as if he was trying to figure it out. It definitely wasn't a sexy corsette, or even a nice pair of lacy knickers he could indulge it. It was just... fluffy. Very, very fluffy. Behind his hands, his lips were pressed together. He really, really tried to fight it, but it was impossible. As soon as he took his hand away, he burst out laughing and it just couldn't stop to the point he became breathless quickly. Tears soon pricked his eyes and escaped, but he still couldn't stop the laughter. "What- what- is that?" he gasped out, but it just caused him to snort with another choked laugh.

Vee stared at him dumbfounded and then looked down at what she was wearing. She hadn't liked it since she put it on, and even when Euan was talking her into it she still hadn't been sure. She should have followed her gut instinct and gone with something else. "U's fucking revenge is what it is. I'm going to kill that fucking lying Irishman. He better damn well be comforting Gee right now because it's the last moment on Earth he's having," she bit out angrily before Matt's laughter started to get to her, and she lost it herself. She clutched the robe back around her body and held it shut as she doubled over in laughter. "Fuck, I can't even get lingerie right!"

Matt was a lost cause. Tears were streaming down his face as he tried to catch his breath. If he put any food or drink near his mouth right now, he'd end up unattractively snorting it out of his nose. He had never in his life been confronted with female lingerie quite like this and he reached to pull the robe back open tso he could look at it again just to prove to himself something like this even existed. But it just set the laughing off in another uncontrollable wave. "I just... found a whole... new respect... for his tactics..." he managed to gasp out through the laughs, now clutching his side so he didn't give himself a hernia in the site of his operation. "He... got you good!"

"I'm glad you find it so amusing," she tried to growl, but she had started to giggle again. She smacked her hand against her forehead, and cursed Euan again as she pushed Matt back into his chair so she could escape. The black robe was dropped to the floor, as were the feathery objects of amusement, leaving a trail in her wake as she disappeared into the bedroom naked. A moment later she came out in a pair of lacy panties, and one of Matt's shirts with only a couple of the buttons done up so they could reveal her flat stomach, and underwear. She pushed her fingers through her hair and gave a much more relaxed sigh, but she just couldn't stop smiling as she watched him laugh. She wiped at the tears on his cheek, and stood between his legs again. "I haven't seen you laugh like that since I met you," she murmured. "I like it, even if it means I had to wear humiliating underwear."

Matt's laughing eased off a little in a few small coughs as his eyes fell on her again. He couldn't help if lace did it more for him than feathers. He didn't want to fuck a pigeon... or whatever the hell the outfit had supposed to be. He wasn't exactly up on his bird watching. He brushed his hands up her thighs with a soft growl, already flicking the buttons on the shirt open again so he could push it aside. He nuzzled at her stomach, his fingers hooking in the elastic of the panties. "This is more like it," he murmured.

Vee once again pushed her fingers into her hair and gave a soft moan as she looked down her body to watch him. "Good, because this is more like it for me, too," she admitted, not missing the funny side of discovering all she had to do was wear the underwear she already had. Wearing his shirt was her own kink. Her hand covered his to keep his fingers in the band of her panties as she bent forward to kiss him eagerly. "Happy birthday to both of us, baby."
