Name: Dean Anders Murphy
Age: 35
Gender: Male
PB: Adam Levine
Description: 6 feet tall, fit, muscled and heavily tattooed, Dean looks like the kind of guy you'd want to avoid at night. He seems perpetually scruffy, unkempt and just a little rough around the edges. When he's walking around the city, which he does whenever he feels like it, he wears an old leather jacket, jeans and beat up sneakers. In winter he trades the sneakers for boots. This is Dean relaxed and not working. In his club, however, he puts on a good suit, cleans up and presents the perfect image of a good businessman and good host. He calls this his neon persona, pretty to look at but very little substance. A description of his tattoos can be found in the abilities section of the application.
Occupation: Club Owner
Personality: At first, Dean was a jaded, slightly bitter teenager he. He was unhappy with his parents and the only thing that really brought him pleasure was his powers. Olde and much wiser, Dean has mellowed considerably. He is happy, confident and self-assured sometimes just a little cocky. He defines himself as a sorcerer, all his other traits are secondary including being gay. He chafes every single time someone tells him magic isn’t real or that sorcerery isn’t as good as the natural magics.
This is where his sarcastic, rather mean side can come out. Anger makes him a little cruel and he can hold a grudge for a damn long time. After his temper wears off, if he’s truly at fault, it’ll take him a few days before apologizing. He’s ungodly stubborn sometimes.
When it comes to love, he’s cautious about falling but once he does he goes hard. Mostly, he likes to have fun in a relationship, keep it light, fun and sexy. He’s deeply loyal to lovers and friends and will do anything for them. He’s the kind of friend who would come out at 4 am to pick your drunk ass up and then tuck you in when he got you home. These days he’s more inclined to laugh and smile, to have a good time and make new friends. He never wants to leave New York and the life he's made for himself.
History: Dean was born in LA, to a lower middle class family where his parents had a rocky relationship. He was always a weird little kid, claiming multiple times to hear voices in the phones or radio static. His parents dismissed this as just an imaginative child and told him to stop talking about it. Suppressing his “imagination”, Dean’s childhood became remarkably typical. He grew up enjoying sports, motorcycles and rock stars. He picked on his little sister who was clearly the favorite in the family and got in trouble with the neighborhood boys. He wanted to be a soccer player by day and rock star by night when he grew up. When he turned thirteen everything changed.
A pigeon landed on his window sill, nothing unusual in a big city but Dean stared at it a little too long. All that imagination he suppressed came roaring to the front and his mind slipped into the pigeons. The whole time, Dean was a sorcerer or in technical terms a technomancer. For two days he flew around LA as passenger with the pigeon until he managed to crawl his way back to himself and his body. He woke up in the hospital, his parents panicked over the mysterious coma he was in. When he tried to explain what happened, the doctors said it was just a delusion brought on by his blackout. His parents told him to stop talking about it, again. Dean refused. He knew he had power, not just an active imagination.
Then John showed up. He was a typical looking LA resident, a little dirtier than most, rougher around the edges but he believed Dean. He explained how life creates magic and cities have a lot of life, a lot of magic but only certain people can tap into that. He explained to Dean what a sorcerer was and how Dean had joined with a pigeon in the first place. He also told Dean’s parents who needed some convincing, which took a rather long time. By the time Dean had figured out how to pull straight electricity of wall sockets, they were convinced.
John started to teach Dean the basics of sorcerery, just enough to get him around the city and not get trapped inside any more pigeons. Dean developed a pretty serious crush on his teacher and realized he was gay which alienated his parents even more than his powers. After that, Dean spent as little time at home as he could. As he was about to start high school, John recommended a boarding school, River’s End Academy, in Iowa. It was a special school where Dean could get a real high school education and continue his sorcerery lessons as well. His parents were pretty happy to send their strange son away.
The distance only furthered the rift between Dean and his family. He was a pretty good student but terrible at hiding his abilities. He hated having to keep the secret and wanted everyone to know what he was and what he could do. This wasn’t a terrible problem at the school as it had plenty of other magically inclined students but the restrictions chaffed. He stopped going home over breaks and instead spent his time studying. He swore to himself he was never going back to LA.
Instead, when he graduated, he rode his motorcycle to New York and settled there. At first it was difficult for him to get by, he did random jobs, worked in motorcycle shops and as a bike messenger. When he wasn’t working, which was pretty frequently, he wandered the city and sunk his powers into it. He discovered a network of sorcerers he could learn from and started hanging out with them more and more. They taught him things that River’s End couldn’t and saw the potential in him to become something great.
Dean, for his part, matured during those first rough years in the city. He went from rebellious, angry young kid to a sarcastic, but rather mild mannered adult. He went to community college for business and made friends in the magical community. He used these connections to start his own club, Club Oddfellows, a strictly magical gathering place. He lives in the back office on a pull out couch, which makes his social life rather lacking right now.
Supernatural/Scifi Characters should also add the following, as they apply to the character:
Species: Human Sorcerer
Abilities: As a technomancer, Dean draws his powers from all modern technology. He can manipulate electricity, concrete or barbed wire if he wills it. His can cast spells, create potions and make wards but his tools are very different from traditional magical tools. He uses things like cell phones, tattoo ink or spray paint and phone books. He is most gifted at electrical, neon and telecommunications magic. Technomancy is the closest technical term to describe what he does, but it's more like magic with urban and modern things. Pigeons are animals adapted to city life, in a way they're synonymous with any major city. Connecting to one is, in a way, connecting to the city. No one knows a city as well as a pigeon or a rat. These things aren't easy for him, that's not where he's really focused his powers but they are possible with the proper preparations.
A lot of what he can do requires the right tools and very little is instantaneous snap his fingers boom he's destroyed all his enemies magic. He's so powerful only because he's connected to New York, which is a powerful city. He can only tap into select parts without asking the city for permission or drawing the right symbols, giving the right offers. What's really different about his magic is that he uses spray paint to draw instead of more traditional things like chalk or blood. His offerings are things like donuts, cheap coffee or a newspaper. To pull power from the city without permission would offend the city's power and potentially other sorcerers who could block him from the city to keep him from being reckless or a tyrant with his power.
For the most part he uses his powers for little petty things like turning the coffee maker on from bed or making the hot water last longer in his shower. Sure, he can work big, impressive spells but for the most part he doesn't because it's a hassle and he's got no reason to. He's no Harry Potter with a great destiny or Harry Dresden out to save the world for the little guy, he's just a sorcerer who's trying to make a living in New York.
He also has a collection of magical tattoos that a fellow sorcerer helped him with. He designed each and every one along with the magic that's in them. The first he made was a defensive ward on his right shoulder. It looks like a flower and when something or someone hits Dean, it blooms to absorb the damage and keep him from getting hurt. It can absorb magical or physical damage. It can't deflect bullets or stop knives, but it can keep them from being fatal. Depending on who casts the spell, he can stop it completely, shrug off the effects or lessen the impact. It's meant to save his life and give him time to fight back, but even with it he can still die with the right spell or if he doesn't get to help in time.
Then he got a protective ward in the shape of a tiger. It comes to life when there is danger, most often pacing across his chest. It can leap off his skin for a few seconds to give Dean time to counter attack. It can’t actually cause damage unless someone tries to draw a damaging ward on him, then it would shred it. The bird on his chest can literally leave Dean's skin and soar above the city with Dean's consciousness in it. He has a hound on his side that can track magic and follow the “scent” of spells or people. The rest of his tattoos are purely decorative. He likes being inked.
A brief description of how they take part in the Deception: Older and wiser, Dean still doesn’t like the Deception. He hates that he can’t tell people what he is and that he has to be careful about using his abilities around most people. If there’s a loophole, Dean finds it and exploits it so he can be himself.
Powerful/Influential Characters should include the following:
A brief description of how their power effects them on a personal level: Dean is aware of the city at all times, even in his sleep. In a sense, he is rooted to it. Leaving the city is incredibly painful for him unless he takes the time to carefully withdraw his powers from it. Drop Dean in the middle of the woods and he is practically powerless.
A description of how they acquired the power: Sorcerery runs in Dean’s family. His uncle is actually a sorcerer as well but he never received any training and went crazy. He lives in a mental hospital in LA. Occasionally, Dean visits and tries to help his uncle find his way back to sanity.
Dean’s powers and canon are loosely based on the Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin. If anything needs to be changed for this community, please let me know.
