Daily Meta Randomness - Greek Warriors of our century, aka Sam and Dean

Oct 16, 2008 01:45

I was thinking, and when I'm thinking it never leads to anything good. So consider this post a big ranting thinking a loud session.

Warriors and Soldiers

Because this is a sensitive issue I'm going to put it under a cut. Warnings are: I'm ranting about ancient Greek history and Spartan warriors who might be involved with the same sex.

I've been chatting with nargynargy and we started to talk about Sam and Dean's happiness. I came to the conclusion that I don't think they would be happy with a wife and 2.5 children after everything that happened. I can't picture them with a family, white fence house, sitting at the playground watching over the kids... I simply think they'd experienced so much and they are hurt so deeply, that only each other can embrace the solitude and sorrow they both feel. They complete each other. That's their perfect happiness and end.

And before I go deeper with my thoughts I wanna make a couple of statements. I do not approve of incest. I mean I'm not a fan of it, but the boys makes it hot, and that's why I read it. I'm writing this thing now because I'm brainstorming, and I want it written. If you against the whole homosexuality and whatnot Supernatural Wincest, stop reading. I will try to be as fact-like as I can.

So now, that I said the grand rules out loud... let's dig deep.

I've been doing some research. From my conversation with nargynargy we started to talk (well I started to talk) about ancient Greeks and their military. This made me think.

Sam and Dean are raised as soldiers by John. They know only one thing is how to fight and watch each other's backs. The only person they can trust is each other. They are the modern warriors of our century. But what makes a warrior better than anyone else? Well ancient Greeks had the answer:

Sacred Band of Thebes, a separate military unit reserved only for men and their beloved youths, is usually considered as the prime example of how the ancient Greeks used love between soldiers in a troop to boost their fighting spirit.

Gorgidas formed an army of 150 male couples, overall 300 people, to be the undefeated army of Greece. They called it the Sacred Band of Thebes.

And if there were only some way of contriving that a state or an army should be made up of lovers and their loves, they would be the very best governors of their own city, abstaining from all dishonour, and emulating one another in honour; and when fighting at each other's side, although a mere handful, they would overcome the world. For what lover would not choose rather to be seen by all mankind than by his beloved, either when abandoning his post or throwing away his arms? He would be ready to die a thousand deaths rather than endure this. Or who would desert his beloved or fail him in the hour of danger?

So according to this, those people who has their loved ones next to them in the battlefield are more dangerous or at least 'till death' has a completely new meaning. Especially if it's two male. Well these are the facts.... now let's see the emotional part.

Imagine that you are on the field. You have seen several people die, you suffered, you killed and you had been injured. No one can understand that physical and emotional pain you went through. No one except someone like you. Someone who went through the same things. The same shit as you did. When you need comfort, you will go to someone, who knows all this.

The line is really thin between to love someone, and to love LOVE someone. You won't even notice and you are there, deeply in love.
I'm saying that situations and extreme circumstances can cause sexual relationships between the same sex. Like, isolation, pressure, abuse, tragic history etc.

I see Sam and Dean as Spartans of our age. They were raised like that and they will never be able to strip it off. It's in their blood. And the love for each other is imprinted in their soul forever. Their love, their bond makes them more stronger and weaker at the same time too. How many time Dean said to Sam "I'm your weakness and they know it too"?! Million times probably and they know it. Everyone knows it. It's their EPIC love.

So the bottom line why I was thinking about this is I think according to the circumstances and the history and past they share Sam and Dean can develop some deeper feelings towards each other. I can see it happen. It doesn't matter if they are brothers or not. I'm just saying they are sharing all the crap... and they might share more too so they are standing stronger on the battlefield shield by shield.

I find this fascinating. I think it's amazing how strong a bond can be within two soldiers and how they used this in the ancient times for their benefit.

This post is open for discussion. I'm really curious what do you think of this subject. It's the possibility and the history that I want to emphasize now.

So my weekly J2 was traded for this post. I promise next time it will be more lulz and cuteness. ;)
