Well, it's February...which means only 1.5 months of winter left:) Which is really good, because lately my skin is so dry and weak from the cold that no matter how much moisturizer I use my knuckles crack and bleed when I make a fistO_o I guess it's been a hard winter for everyone this year...
Also, I have a slight problem...I'm almost done part 1 of Odoroki SP 5, but I can't seem to download part 2^^; I was using the links on forgyoza, but part 1 of part 2 is always 'temporarily unavailable' (for weeks...O_o). Does anyone have part 1 of part 2 somewhere I could download it?:S
But moving on, here is the next bit of part 1, the sound experiments:D
Sho: I didn't tear it.
Aiba: It was the top part right? The part that ripped right?
Sho: That's right
Nino: You didn't throw a rock or something right. (writing)
Sho: I didn't! So, the next experiment that an scholar has always wanted to try is this here. A sound experiment: if you ran by in front
of sounds being played one note at a time would it sound like music?
[Announcer: Gathering together the instruments used in 'Ponyo on the cliff', lining them up in order of performance, and having each
one continue to play just one note. If you ran by in front of them would you be able to hear Ponyo's song in the end? That kind of
experiment.]
Ogura: Who thought this up? Tsuki-sensei! What happened?
Tsuki: Well, isn't it interesting? (writing)
Ogura: How do you think it will turn out?
Tsuki: Well, there are things like the way of running, the speed, the distance, of course. If you do it right I think you'll be able
to hear it.
Ijuuin: So someone is constantly going 'do~', someone is constantly playing 're~', and you're passing in front of them right? Well,
it's difficult to adjust that for the spacing, but it seems like you could hear it.
Chizuru: Wouldn't the previous sound stick in your head? Then they'd pile up on top of each other, ehh...I get the feeling you wouldn't
be able to hear it.
Sho: Ohno-san?
Ohno: The actual sound of the performance would sound like 'buwa~', and when you passed in front of it you'd hear it like 'fuwa~'.
(writing)
Sho: Um, the difference between 'buwa~' and 'fuwa~' is...?
Ogura: Sound specialist Suzuki-sensei?
Suzuki: The instruments are those that have a strong forward output. I think it would work well if they were instruments like trumpets
that just project their sound forward.
Ogura: What's your opinion, Hara-sensei?
hara: If the trumpets played their sounds at the same time you'd hear them together. So you'd hear it as a chord. (writing)
[Announcer: And, in that way, the opinions are mixed. There are 7 scholars who predict that it will be heard as the 'Ponyo' song.
Furthermore, there's also this other experiment on sound.]
Sho: If you put a siren on a high speed racing car that goes 250km/h what would it sound like? (writing) There's also the so-called
Doppler effect, that's what makes the ambulance sirens go 'pee-poe pee-poe pee-poe' (from higher to lower). If you put a siren on
a racing car what would it sound like?
Sensei: What's the sound of the siren? Is it 'pee-poe pee-poe'?
Ogura: Would the one that goes 'ooo-ooo' have been better?
Sensei: Even 'ooo-ooo', at any rate you have to make it clear to us. (writing)
Ijuuin: I wonder if you'll be able to hear the 'pee-poe'?
Ogura: The siren too.
Yuuka: There wouldn't be anything like not being able to hear it at all? (writing)
Sensei: What do you mean by 'not being able to hear it'? (writing)
Tokui: I think it'll start as 'pee-poe pee-poe' and then midway through change to 'pei~'. So 'pee-poe pee-poe pei~'. (writing)
Sensei: The two sounds won't become one. (writing)
Tokui: Ah, is that so?
Sensei: Yes.
[Announcer: Furthermore, if everyone in a choir sang into their own string telephone would you be able to hear it as a choir from the
paper cup? We're doing that kind of sound experiment as well. If you put a siren on a racing car what would it sound like? There was
a shocking experiment result.]
Jun: If you ran by in front of musical instruments playing one continuous note each would it sound like a song? (writing)
Aiba: How about it?
[Announcer; The observers for this experiment are Takahashi George and Nishioka Sumiko-san.]
Jun: Do you think you'll be able to hear it?
Sumiko: I do think you'll be able to hear it. (writing)
Jun: It'll work?
Sumiko: Yes.
George: Wouldn't it depend on the speed and spacing? (writing)
Jun: What do you think Aiba-san, can it work?
Aiba: I think it can definitely work. (writing)
Jun: It can definitely work?
Aiba: Definitely. There's no way this can not work! Here, let's try it. That's right. These.
Sumiko: WShat are those?
[writing: Brought recorders]
Jun: Wait a minute, what is this, elementary school?
[Announcer: Aiba says that you can quickly verify it, but...]
Aiba: Let's do 'do mi so'. Ready, and-! Keep playing it, okay? Here I go! Ready-
Chizuru: What'll happen?
Sho: Did he hear it?
Jun: So? (writing)
Aiba: Maybe we should quit. (writing)
[Announcer: He says that each individual sound was too close, so they sounded mixed together. On top of which, it seems that the running
speed has some connection to it. Which means that what the party headed for was, unbelievably...]
Sumiko: Amazing! So wide! (writing)
George: What is this?
Aiba: Super huge! (writing)
[Announcer: This here is one of the world's foremost high-speed racetracks, having held numerous international races beginning with
the Indy Japan. Here the musicians from 'Ponyo on the cliff' are lined up, and will each play their own note in the performance. If
you drove by in front of them in a car would it sound like the 'Ponyo' song in the end? That's the experiment they'll hold]
Jun: So, that means I'd like to finally start the experiment.
Sumiko: Yes!
Jun: But since this time we're doing the experiment on such a large racetrack they'll have to be really loud. Today we're calling in
some trumpet players. (writing)
Sumiko: You're calling them?
Jun: If you please! (writing)
Sumiko: Ah! I can hear them! Amazing! So cute~!
[Announcer: Today they spent tons of money and readied a horde of trumpet players.]
Sumiko: Still more?? Amazing~!
Sho: Eh, how many people?
Sumiko: How far are they going to go?
All: Huh? (writing)
Sumiko: Huh?
Aiba: What are you doing?
[writing: Kuwano Nobuyoshi]
Sumiko: Amazing!
Aiba: Kuwano-san, what are you doing?
Kuwano: Well, if you're talking about trumpets then surely it's me! (writing)
Aiba: That's true, but just a minute-
Kuwano: Just a second, okay? Nikuman (pork bun) anman (bean paste bun) I'm Kuwaman. (writing)
[Announcer: In other words, with veteran trumpeter Kuwano-san sitting in the troupe of trumpters numbers 47. And the song they're going
to try playing today is...(writing)]
Jun: Kuwano-san, if you please.
[writing: Ponyo on the cliff]
[Announcer: There are some suspicious sections in Kuwano's trumpet melody, but since each of them is only going to play one note I
guess it's fine.]
Kuwano: That was close, that was close!
Jun: We'd like to have them play this beginning part of 'Ponyo on the cliff'.
Aiba: Um, they're wearing numbered bibs right? What's the meaning of the bibs? (writing)
Sumiko: Yeah!
Jun: This, you see, has a total of 47 notes.
Aiba: I see, I see.
Jun: We're going to have them line up in this order. Because the first person will only be playing 'do'. The first person is 'do'.
Next, the second sound is 'la'. The next person will only play 'la'.
George: The second sound is 'la' is it...
Jun: The second sound is 'la'. And they'll go on lined up like this until the very end, where Kuwano-san will-
Kuwano: In that order.
Aiba: The leader is at the end, right?
KuwanO: I'm 'fa'.
Aiba: Ah, I'm kind of looking forward to this.
Sumiko: Yeah!
Kuwano: Let's do our best~! (writing)
Jun: If you please.
Aiba: if you please!
Jun: So, Kuwano-san and fellow trumpeters, if you please.
Kuwano: Yes!
[Announcer: Which means that they hurry to line up. The distance between the number one and number 47 player in the trumpet squad
is an unbelievable 480m.]
Kuwano: Can I have a minute? I'm at the very edge aren't I! (writing)
Sumiko: Do your best!
Jun: If you please.
Sumiko: If you please~!
[Announcer: Yes, please do your best father.]
Ijuuin: He's running! He's running there...
[Announcer: And the lining up of the trumpet squad is complete. For this experiment a quarter-note is 15m, so based on that an eighth
is 7.5m. They decided the distance based on the length of the notes, and lined themselves up according to the score. They also opened
up an equal distance for the quarter pause.]
Yuuka: So they lined up that way?;)
[Announcer: So, everyone is in charge of one note; 'do' if it's 'do', 're' if it's 're', we'll have them constantly keep playing it,
lined up over 480m. The last sound is #47, Kuwano-san, we're relying on you!]
Yuuka: So lonely~!
Nino: Kuwaman is lonely. Kuwaman-san?
[Announcer: Well then, if they all played at the count of three how would you hear the sounds? When they try listening from right in
the middle of the trumpet squad...]
Jun: Ready, and-!
Yuuka: This is kind of pretty in it's own way.
Nino: Well you...can't hear it, huh.
Aiba: I can't imagine this at all. (writing)
Sumiko: Me too.
[Announcer: Of course, at this point they can't hear the 'Ponyo' song. This time the car will start 200m before the first trumpeter
and drive along beside them at a speed of about 100km/h. In the end, will you be able to hear intruments playing individual notes as a
song? (writing) The experiment begins!]
Jun: Here we go!
[Announcer: Yet another shocking experiment result comes out! (writing) We had the trumpeters line up according to the 'Ponyo on the
cliff' score and each play only one continuous note. The experiment is, if you drive by in front of them at a speed of 100km/h will
you be able to hear it as the 'Ponyo' song? In the end, will they be able to hear it?]
Jun: here we go!
[Announcer: But, before that... (writing)]
Aiba: Can you hear a choir in a paper cup~? Alright. First, please take a look over here. Over here there's one, over there there's
eight.
Jun: You can tell by looking.
Aiba: That's what we have, right. First of all then, these here are the altos. We'll have the two altos sing here. And, the sopranos,
the tenors, and the basses will sing. So then, when you're listening, since there's only one opening, will it sound like a
choir?
Sumiko: Ehhh, I want to hear it!
Aiba: It's this here (the connection) that's the key point. (writing)
George: This is it, isn't it. I'm really unsure that this can transfer it.
Jun: I mean, this part is really sloppy.
[Announcer: And the ones helping with this experiment today are these choir members.]
Nino: You're spending too much money again!
Aiba: We decided that this song is the song we'll have you sing today. Go ahead!
[writing: Why 'Cutie Honey'?]
Nino: The left, the left. The left.
Chizuru: he's singing it really skillfully.
Ogura: Hey...hey...
Jun: You're doing it with all your heart huh. Can we get you to do it by yourself?
[writing: By yourself please]
Chizuru: He wants to do it by himself!
[writing: Bass]
Bass: No way, no way, no way, I don't want you to look at me~, honey flash!
Sumiko: I think you'll hear only him. (writing)
[Announcer: Without delay they have them start standing by. So that they won't be able to hear the voies of the choir outside of the
paper cup the string telephone wire is 70m in length. At a distance of 60m from the cup being held by Aiba and the others is the
connection point. From there we have them divide up into sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. In the end, will they sound like a choir
on the string telephone?]
Aiba: So, the preparations are done!
Jun: Isn't this impossible? (writing)
George: Impossible, right?
Sumiko: Isn't that long? (writing)
George: Isn't this impossible with even just one person? (writing)
Jun: I think it's that connection point over there. (writing)
Sumiko: Here they are, the problems.
Jun: Isn't this impossible? (writing) It's this kind of thing.
Aiba: Despite that, if they each pull their own tight this obstacle isn't even so much as a fart. (writing)
[Announcer: Will this branched string telephone transfer the sound? (writing) First, let's try listening to each part separately.]
[song: 'I'll change']
Aiba: First of all, since you're completely doubting this please listen first. Soprano-san~! Soprano-san, can we get you to sing by
yourselves first?
Sopranos: Yes~.
Aiba: Here we go! Ready, and-!
[Announcer: In the end...]
Aiba: George-san, how is it?
Jun: I can't hear them at all, over here.
George: I can hear them. (writing)
[Announcer: Unbelievably, he heard them!]
Sumiko: Amazing!
Aiba: See!
Sumiko: Amazing!
George: There's even a little bit of reverb. (writing)
Aiba: It sounds good? Alto-san, is that okay?
Sumiko: Eh, I can't hear anything at all.
Aiba: How about it?
Jun: They told me 'look over here, honey'. (writing)
[Announcer: You all as well, go ahead.]
Ijuuin: Perfect.
Chizuru: Amazing huh.
[Announcer: You can clearly hear each of their parts.]
Ijuuin: It has nothing to do with the connection does it.
Chizuru: It doesn't.
[Announcer: So, it's finally time for the real thing. In the end, will the 8 voices mix and sound like a choir?]
[song: 'I'll change']
Aiba: Okay, here we go. Can you hear a choir in a paper cup, begin the experiment!
Jun: It still seems like it's going to come over here doesn't it? It reallt feels that way...
[Announcer: In the end...]
Sumiko: Ahhh~!
Aiba: What, what?
Sumiko: Ah! Amazing!
Aiba: Can I listen too?
George: Go ahead.
Jun: Sure.
Aiba: Amazing. Woah! Amazing! Amazing! This is better than any speaker!
Sumiko: Amazing!
Aiba: Go ahead George-san.
George: Ah, just a little more, after a little more.
Jun: They said 'flash!'. (writing)
[Announcer: Uneblievably, it seems that they've heard it magnificently well. Well then, those of you in the audience, please listen
along with us.]
Aiba: This time please sing it for the people of Japan. (writing)
Sho: Amazing.
Aiba: Amazing.
Sho: Amazing.
Aiba: 'Da da da';P
Aiba: Alright~!
[Announcer: Other songs as well...they could also hear them as a choir. Well then, on this elan, before going to the 'Pony ponyo' experiment,
here's one more sound experiment.]
[writing: Sen no Kaze ni natte (song name)]
Aiba: If you stuck a siren on a race car and drove it along how would it sound~?
[Announcer: The siren on ambulances gets higher as it gets closer and lower as it gets further away. If you stuck this siren on a race
car and drove it along how would that 'pee-poe' sound?]
Jun: It goes like 'pee-poe pee-poe pee-poe pee-poe pee-poe' (higher to lower) right? 'Pee-poe~'. (writing; up and down)
Sumiko: it'll be just the initial 'pee~' sound left over, like when there's a broadcasting accident. (writing)
George: I kind of agree with that too. Like 'pee~hyun~'. (writing)
Aiba: So you won't be able to hear the 'poe'? (writing)
George: The 'poe' won't come. (writing)
Aiba: I think it will be 'bi'. I think you'll only be able to hear it here. (writing) Over there-
Jun: So it will be over in an instant? (writing)
Aiba: Bi... (writing)
[Announcer: This is what's helping them out with this experiment. Japan's fastest man, Matsuda Tsugio-san. He's the amazing driver who
won the Formula Nippon 2 years in a row.]
Wayyyy too much onomatopeia in this sectionXD But I love their individual descriptions of what the sound will do...and I was astonished that you can hear a choir in a paper cup!:O That's amazing! Choice of song, not so good though...XD And the Ponyo experiment, I get the feeling it won't work, but it's a cute idea;) If anyone hasn't seen Ponyo I highly recommend it! Then again, I love anything Ghibli<3 Look forward to the conclusion=)
In other news, I'm working on something very promising for my future in my private life right now...I can't say what it is, but please wish me luck, I want so much for this to happen for me...>_< Take care, see you soon:)
