Burn

Teatime on the TARDIS meant nice, hot cups of tea (slightly sweetened for Rose, and almost precipitating sugar for the Doctor) and chocolate biscuits.

They always made the tea on the little gas stove, a fact Rose found extremely amusing amidst all the TARDIS’ superior technology. When she’d commented, back when the Doctor had been all blue eyes and black leather, he had replied quite seriously, “I like to cook with fire.” Rose had sort of left it at that.

There were times, however, when the fire could be a little too efficient. Today was apparently one of them.

“Yeow!” cried Rose, quickly pulling the teacup away from her mouth.

The Doctor spun round. “What?” he asked.

“Burned my tongue…” Rose grimaced, fighting back tears. “Hurts.”

The Doctor rolled his eyes, presumably at inefficient human bodies.

“Killing off your poor taste buds… Oh, come here,” he said. He pulled her close and promptly stuck his tongue in her mouth.

“Do-gmpf…!” Rose tried to protest, but it truly was quite hard to talk around the Doctor’s tongue. He wasn’t kissing her, really, just swiping his tongue across hers. His nice, cool tongue. Cool, and long, and… mmm, tingly?

Rose wasn’t sure whether to keep standing there or to try really kissing him. Lord knew she wanted to, but she’d never thought…

While Rose was still caught up in indecision, the Doctor pulled back.

“There,” he said, “Better?”

“Er,” said Rose, rather ineloquently. Feeling completely not up to dealing with her whirlwind emotions, she shoved them aside and tried to focus on her tongue. She moved it back and forth and was pleasantly surprised to find that it barely hurt at all. Even dragging it over her teeth just felt vaguely itchy.

Rose smiled at the Doctor and he grinned back, pleased to have made her feel better.

“Your spit is tingly, by the way,” she informed him.

“Time Lord,” he said happily.

Rose gave him a look.

“To be fair, your saliva does its job of hydrating your mouth, helping digest your food, protecting from bacteria, etc., but my saliva, in addition to having other healing properties, can also be an analgesic. Like novocaine. If I need it to. Impressive, isn’t it?”

“Don’t lie,” she said impishly, “You really just wanted to stick your tongue in my mouth.”

His cheeks pinked but she continued before he could get a word in. Sticking her nose up in the air, she said, “And you couldn’t even kiss me properly while you were at it. On a scale of 1-10, maybe a 3. Not very impressive, I’d say.”

While the Doctor was still looking gobsmacked and indignant, she brought her cup of tea back to her mouth to see if it had cooled yet. Nope. Shame.

She chanced a look to see if taunting him and then ignoring him was having any effect. He certainly had a lovely dumbstruck expression on his face. His left eyebrow was still up close to his hairline.

“Rose Tyler,” said the Doctor at last, “I’ll have you know that I am off the scale of impressiveness in practically every way. And the purpose of sticking my tongue in your mouth was to be healing you, not pleasing me. Or you-whatever… I think you’re just trying to get me to stick my tongue in your mouth again!”

Rose noted that he didn’t look particularly displeased at the prospect.

“Oh yeah?” she said, with a naughty smile, “Prove it!”

The Doctor gave Rose a measuring look before reaching up to take her teacup. “I think you had better put this down,” he said slowly.

“Why?” she asked, feigning innocence.

“You want me to prove to you that you want me to kiss you? Tea’s extraneous to this little experiment…Besides,” he murmured breathily, his eyes seeming to narrow and darken, “I think your expression is confirmation enough…”

The Doctor stepped closer, effectively pinning her between himself and the wall. Then he kissed her. Properly.

Rose’s last coherent thought was that his tongue was making her tingly again, but in a completely different and much better way…
