Title: 24 hours' time
Author: nyaaaaaauuuuuuu
Genre: Angst
Rating: PG
Characters: Ten, Rose
Spoilers: Through the end of S2.
Summary:The Doctor and the storm. Time's running out.
Author's Notes: This morning was nice, but it started to snow later. Blah weather. So I felt like having a bit of a cry and watched Doomsday over. And I have a bunch of other fics I'm working on, but I needed to exorcise the angst. So this is for my fellow Rhode-Islanders. Hope the weather didn't make you as depressed as it made me. :\
Disclaimer: Do not own...

24 hours' time

Within twenty-four hours, she'll be gone. He can't see how or why. Too close to his own future, isn't it? But he wants to know. He feels it like a weight on his shoulders, the coming storm. Less than a day from now, Rose Tyler and the Doctor are parted.

But she's smiling. She wants to go home, see her Mum.

Maybe this is how it happens. Something keeps her at home, unable to travel with him any longer. He might stay for a little while, if that was the case, but he couldn't - he couldn't live...

She wants to give Jackie the bazoolium barometer. And her dirty laundry. Quirky little human.

Maybe she decides she wants to stay at home. Maybe she realises he's been flitting her from place to place, just on the edge of the storm now, just out of reach of its indifferent fury. Maybe she's tired of fighting. Maybe she's tired of him.

She giggles, pokes him in the side, and goes off to take a shower.

Maybe not.

She would live, though, if she had to be separated from him. She would. She's strong. She's smart, and she's spirited. That's what he likes about her. Rose Tyler. She'd live. He won't let her die.

The big yellow button slips in his sweaty hands.

This is it. This is his choice and the storm is now. His choice.

He loops the chain around her neck, catches Pete's eyes. Pete Tyler knows about making tough choices. A slight nod, and he pushes his button.

He'll never see her again, but she'll live.

For a second she's not there. He sees her but he can't feel her. Then reality snaps back, stinging, like an elastic, and her future has entwined so with his own that he can't see it. He can't see it at all.

He's terrified.

And I'm never going to leave you...

But you will, he wants to shout. You will!

He can't tell up from right, left from down. It's all he can do to tell her 6, 6, 6, 6, 6... Set them all to 6.

But she's here now and she's so close to him. After they were done, they were parted - in his mind he'd already started to say goodbye, but she's here. The storm roars around them, but she's here, at the eye, with him, and the computers are set, the clamps attached.

Hold on now, Rose, hold on tight. Ride the storm! You've done it before.

She smiles at him as the winds pick up, just a small smile, but he sees it. And he wants to let go of his clamp and scramble over there and bury his face in her neck, bury himself inside her very being.

The storm rages now, inside and out. The future is black and choppy; the past is blurry, and there's only here-and-now. Here and now and Rose. And hope. Hope is a good emotion. His hearts sing with it.

Hold on.

She can't hold.

He can see her little human fingers bending, muscles straining.

This can't be how it ends.

He refuses to BELIEVE that this is the parting he saw and could not foresee.

NO.

She can't fall into the Void. Into the Howling. It's worse than anything he can think of, and she doesn't deserve it. He does. He should be the one condemned to oblivion. He can't let her be - he WON'T let her be...

But he can't even slow her down. He can't switch himself for her, and he can't let himself let go. He has no control over the situation but it can't end like this--

Pete caught her.

He lets go of the clamp. His body leads him to the wall. The white, white wall.

Pete caught her. Three seconds. Three seconds and now she's not dead. Now, she's alive.

He puts one hand against the wall. Rests his head against it.

There she is - right there; like a warm, yellow breeze, a breath of life, an echoing ghost of her lingers in this universe.

The walls have closed, and this is how it ends.

He will never see her again. Never hold her, never tease her. Even now, the feeling of her is fading.

But she's alive.
