It was about about 6:30AM when Nick and I went to the Metro station to take the train. Nick bought me an unlimited 3-day pass to the buses and trains. He was a gentleman and took my luggage (a suitcase) for me. The metro was directly connected to the bus terminal, we just had to go down an escalator. I was telling Nick about the creepy guy at Port Authority ("I help you, you help me") and then we were at the platform waiting for the train. Like New York, the station was kind of big. The trains run underground in Montreal too (some lines in the Bronx and Queens, the train runs up in the air; don't know about the other boroughs). It was pretty cold outside, but it was warm in the metro.
And then the train showed up! Montreal's subway system is tiny and extremely underwhelming compared to NYC Transit. IIRC, there are more or less 25 different subway lines (and only tourists can't read a subway map) in the 5 boroughs, of New York, while Montreal has... about 6 or 7. lol. Well, maybe they have a crapload of buses to make up for their lacking subway system. But even then, New York probably has way more bus lines than Montreal has.
For those who are curious, here's a map of Montreal's subway system:
http://www.stm.info/english/metro/a-mapmet.htm (Nick picked me up from Berri-UQAM [don't know why it's always written in all caps like that] and we got off at Guy-Concordia.)
So this big blue train showed up. We were headed to the hotel to drop off our luggage first (check in wasn't until 3PM and we were there at 7AM, lol). I called them on the bus at 10PM the previous night and explained that we'd be there at 7AM, and asked if it was alright if our luggage could be held there until check-in time. They were glad to hold our bags there, so as to not have to drag a large suitcase around for 8 hours, we headed there first.
The hotel's address is 1155 Rue Guy. The train ride was not long; only about 10 minutes. We got off at a station called Guy-Concordia. Also, the train stops are all announced in French; there's no dual-language announcements (totally unfair!). So we get off at Guy-Concordia and exit the metro station. The area looked a lot like downtown Manhattan. Lots of big buildings and people handing out newspapers (in French). Nick tried locating the hotel (or something) with his iPhone, and after a minute or 2, we were walking in the right direction. The walk was relatively short; it took about 5~7 minutes until we reached l'Hotel Maritime!
I could not get this hotel's name right for the life of me before I got there. I kept thinking it was "Marimite," as in Maria-sama ga Miteru, hahahahaha. Anyway, we arrived at the hotel. The woman at the front desk kind of looked concern because there we were, waltzing in there with luggage at 7AM when check-in is at 3PM. But I already spoke to someone about it when I booked the room and the night before I arrived - the rooms won't be ready at 7AM, but we were allowed to leave our luggage, at least. So we left my suitcase and Nick's backpack and we were off to explore the city.
Nick and I started walking for quite a while, actually! We were trying to find some place that was actually open at 7AM for some breakfast. Nick was telling me about some restaurants we were passing, how he liked the food there, etc. After a while, we reached pretty much the end of the long chain of shops and restaurants and turned back around to keep looking the opposite way, haha. At least it was slightly warmer at 7AM than it was at 6AM. It felt like a spring morning instead of an autumn morning. Soon enough, Nick noticed this small cafe-ish kind of place that we missed during our first search. We went inside.
It was a pleasant cafe/diner-ish sort of place. There was this nice old man behind the counter. Nick and I looked at the menu displayed on the counter and I picked an apple turnover with lemon tea. Nick had a croissant du fromage, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, Nick really likes croissants. He got some tea too. He ordered for me, and I just stood there looking like an oblivious tourist who can't understand the local language (90% French)! =^__^= Yeah, most signs were in French, everybody spoke French, TV was in French... I was in a francophone world. I did, however, got to use my French skills to communicate with somebody when I first got there, though! When the bus arrived in Montreal and I got off, a little boy was blocking my way and wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. The mother saw this and scolded him (I assume to move aside) and I politely said, "excusez-moi" as I tried to manuever so I wouldn't knock the child over with my suitcase.
There. I am francophone. (I feel happy of myself.)
So Nick was talking to the man in French and they started laughing for some reason and I just kept going =^__^= even though I didn't know what was going on. So yeah, breakfast was ordered and we took a seat at the back of the diner and waited for our food. I suddenly realized, DANG IT, I don't have Canadian money yet! But Nick said I didn't have to worry about money today, that he would be treating. He's so nice! *__*
So we got our food and our tea (neither of us drink coffee) and Nick and I just chatted for a while. Hahaha, I am helpless, so I was having trouble cutting up my apple turnover. Nick took the fork and knife from me and cut it up for me, lol. I just don't use knives that often. I'm NEVER in a restaurant setting. So I slurp my soup, I slurp my tea, and I just stab things with my fork, hold it up in the air and bite it like that.
Nick was telling me about Canadian money and how even though Queen Elizabeth has very little to with Canada, her face is on their money and that he didn't like it. Nick is a very logical, thinking kind of person.* I just go with whatever feels right at the moment, lol. (*Which is a little frustrating for me sometimes, as I think he expects there to be a rational explanation for the way I think/feel about certain things, when sometimes I just can't explain it; I just know how I feel.)
That man was very nice, but Nick told me it looked like he had man-boobs. THAT'S SO RUDE! That's a nice old man and Nick said something like that about him. ): For shame!! So we had breakfast and tea, and then we were off once again.
Our next destination was Mont-Royal. We had to take a train, then a bus, but Nick made a mistake in which bus we should be taking, so we had to wait for a second bus, haha. By that time, it was sooooooo hooooooot... now it was starting to feel like summer. Nick and I sat on a bench and waited for about 15 minutes for the bus. I was fatigued, but not sleepy, despite only having 2 hours of sleep on an uncomfortable bus. Nick said he just got 3 hours of sleep the previous night. After sitting and waiting for about 3 (out of 15) minutes, I did something EXTREMELY BOLD (for me).
I put my head on his shoulder.
いやぁぁぁ~ん! *covers face in embarrassment*
So we stayed like that until the bus came. We took the bus up to the beginning of Mont-Royal. The scenary looked less Manhattan-ish and more like we were in a small town area.
Okay, let me tell you, that climb up the mountain was TOUGH. @__@ I was wearing sneakers, thankfully, but maaaaaaaannn... I have no stamina whatsoever. I am not a physical activity person. I am anemic and too skinny. But Mont-Royal is this big mountain in the center of Montreal. According to Nick, there is a law in place than no building can be taller than this mountain. The people of Montreal have, for the most part, left this mountain largely untouched and have built the city around the mountain. So just imagine a giant mountain with tall buildings (but none higher than the mountain's peak) constructed all around its base. That's pretty much what it is!
So up the mountain we went. Because people haven't done much tampering to the mountain (to preserve history and all that good stuff), it is wise to bring your own water bottle. All we had was that bottle of now warm orange juice, lol. The agonyyyyyy. There were water fountains at the base of the mountain and that was it. After that, you were on your own. It was pretty rough!
So Nick and I walked all over Mont-Royal, enjoying the scenary. At the top of the mountain, there is a giant cross that they light up during the night. We got to the cross, sat on a bench for a while, and went exploring some more. My poor feet, though! It was pretty much walking on grass and rock and wood. Bumps and grooves everywhere. There were some pretty steep parts too. Nick held my hand (いやぁぁぁ~ん! *covers face in embarrassment*) so that I wouldn't fall and hurt myself (very possible).
The first time he held my hand, I was thinking, ">__< Oh my gosh, he's holding my hand! It's so warm..." because I am a loser who thinks holding hands is the best thing ever to do with your loved one. lol.
So we held hands (and I was in heaven) and adventured through Mont-Royal. It was about noon by the time we were done, so we were on Mont-Royal for ~3 hours. Nick teased me about my lack of energy and stamina. ): I was all worn out. Before taking the bus to go back where we were, we laid in the grass for a bit next to each other, looking up at the sky. Nick likes doing this, and it is very sweet and serene. I am not an outdoors kind of person at all, but this was nice.
Before catching the bus, since it'd be a while for the next one to show up, we walked a little further past the mountain and there was this big lake. There was a duck swimming in the lake, so I attempted to go take a picture. Attempted. It kind of flew away once I got closer. Oh, well.
We caught a bus and headed to go see the
Oratory.
nov6 also recommended I see it. Wow, it was HUGE! But after a day of treading through Mont-Royal, that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many steps. Sorry guys, I couldn't handle it. We walked up like... 1/4th of the stairs and I just couldn't take anymore. My poor feet. T__T Maybe if we had gone on a day that had no 3-hour mountain climbing involved, I'd be up for walking up all. those. steps. *shakes head* But not that day.
From what Nick told me, the peculiar stairway in the center of the two regular looking ones is for people who wish to renew their faith (or something similar). They do this by climbing up the stairs with their knees. I was pretty impressed, climbing up all these stairs with your feet seemed like enough of a chore! I'm telling you, those stairs gave off the impression that it was half a mile on an incline. Nope, can't do it. Not after Mont-Royal, I can't.
So we went back down what steps we did climb and took a bus to the metro and then took a train to a station called McGill. There, we went to this giant underground mall in order to get a little something to eat. It was about 12:30PM by that time. We were looking for an A&E (since I only know it as a root beer brand in the US, but it's a restaurant in Canada, apparently, lol) but alas, no A&E could be found. So Burger King it was, lol. That's alright, cheeseburgers are always welcome.
Nick ordered for me (in French, as usual) and paid for our food (he treated again!). He also got 2 free movie tickets from some promotion Burger King was having, so this went towards my insisting that we go see the final Harry Potter movie. Before I got to Montreal, Nick was telling me about this thing that I MUST try. It's called poutine. It's french fries covered in cheese clumps and gravy. I saw that Burger King was actually selling it, and so I ordered one to see what all the fuss was about. This poutine thing is apparently an extremely popular Quebecois dish. Nick told me NOBODY that he knows doesn't like poutine. So, here I go to try it.
I devoured that cheeseburger (it was so good). And then it was time for the poutine. Eh, it was okay. Nothing spectacular. It did leave me with a bit of an upset stomach though. I had to go to the bathroom soon after, hahahaha. I went to the restroom, put my shoulder bag on the door, but the weight of the bag was a bit much for the door so the stall slowly crept open WHILE I WAS NAKED FROM THE WAIST DOWN TRYING TO PEE! DX DX DX Luckily, nobody saw that! I don't think...?
So we had lunch and it was about 1:30PM. We decided to go back to the hotel, even though it was too early for check-in time. We would just hang out in the lobby of the hotel for an hour, then. We took the metro (train) back to Guy-Concordia and walked to the hotel. It was 2PM, but I figured I'd just ask anyway if the room was ready. I remember going to Baltimore in 2009 and the hotel there (a Hilton) totally let me go up to the room even though I was 90 minutes early for check-in time. Maybe the Maritime will do the same?
Luckily, they did! They let us up an hour early. We got my suitcase and Nick's backpack from behind the front desk, and our room was 909. The hotel had no floor 13, I noticed.
The room was nice! As mentioned in the online reviews, the TV is kind of old, lol. :P But it was a nice, pleasant room. The bed was pretty big, and I was so happy that I could take a nap for an hour or two, FINALLY! The second I saw that nice big bed, all the sleepiness I was supressing hit me and I couldn't wait to take a name, haha. I took a shower first and changed into some fresh clothes.
But then. I got really nervous all of a sudden.
A guy. A girl. In a room. With a bed. Together. Alone.
@__________@
I cannot begin to describe how incredibly nervous I was. No, no, nothing ~happened~ (I'm simply not ready and would like to wait for marriage), but I was still so nervous! I was going to be alone in a room with a man! Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh.
We turned on the TV and... I can't even remember what was on TV. Some weird sci-fi show. It was pretty dumb, though. It was in English, but the acting and story were pretty terrible. I took my Shaymin (Land Forme) and Mudkip plushies out (Nick enjoys Pokemon too). I left Shaymin (Sky Forme) at home though. I was also going to bring my Kirisame Marisa and Alice Margatroid plushies too, but Nick doesn't know anything about Touhou so he probably wouldn't recognize the characters. So I just took Mudkip and Shaymin with me to Montreal. He pretty much went like "lol" at my plushies though. ):
I also took out my netbook and with a call to the front desk, we were able to hook it up to the wifi internet! So I could dress up on poupeegirl while in Montreal and not have to miss a day! \o/ Yay! And plus, I could use Skype to report to my mother as well with the wifi enabled.
So I took a nap for about... maybe an hour and a half. And uwaaaaaa... Nick gave me my first kiss before I went to sleep... *embarrassed* I do not know if I am, um, "a good kisser," as I have not kissed anyone before Nick, but okay!
I remember when I was about 19 or so (by the way, I am 23 now and Nick is 26), I said to myself that I would remember how many kisses me and my boyfriend or husband would share! I'd count them all! Needless to say, my mind kind of went blank when he kissed me for the first time... So I couldn't count... lol...
When I awoke, it was after 4PM. We actually didn't go out again for the rest of the day. We had mountain climbing adventures and all that, but it was great to just stay in and lounge around to just talk and stuff. Well, Nick went out, but just to get some Chinese food for dinner. :P We wanted a microwave to heat up my leftover poutine, but alas, they were charging $15 for a microwave. +__+ So no thanks. I will eat it cold, I guess.
So an uneventful evening, but it was nice to just relax and take it easy. I fell asleep at around 11PM. I always fell asleep before Nick. He likes to read (novels, manga, whatever) before going to bed, so that's what he did. The bed was nice and soft and comfy, and it was very comforting to sleep with Nick next to me. ♥
One month ago, I was with my beloved. Uwaa. I can't believe it's been a month. Feels more like a week. I want to go back to visit as soon as possible. >__< Montreal really is the happiest place on Earth. It was so lovely there and I'd love to live there myself.
And thus concludes my first day in Montreal. This also took me about 3 hours to type up, as did the previous entry! I'll talk about Saturday, July 16th in the next entry tomorrow!
