Name: Goliath
Movie/series: Gargoyles
Year/Position: Staff, Campus Security, night shift. He COULD teach a literature class, but it would have to be a night class.
Non-Speaking Animal Companion(if any):
BrooonxPowers(if any): Technically speaking, Goliath has no powers, but gargoyles as a species are a lot stronger than humans. Goliath is strong even for his species and has very high endurance, and although he can’t fly, he's very good at gliding. He lacks the independent or long-range flight abilities of smaller flying animals, but is capable of impressive aerial acrobatics with enough wind.
Gargoyles do have an unusual biological feature which could be classified as a power. They turn to an organic stonelike substance when the sun rises, during which time they don’t age, sicknesses and poisons in their system are neutralized, and they heal from their injuries. At sunset, they break out of their stone shells refreshed and rejuvenated. It’s a handy little biological anomaly, as long as somebody doesn’t smash you during the day . . . which, unfortunately, has happened a lot more than Goliath would like.
Canon history: Tooo long to write, have a
wiki.AU history: Goliath was hatched with his rookery siblings in one of the Middle Kingdoms, where his clan had lived among the seaside cliffs for generations. During his life, his clan made an alliance with the human prince Malcolm, who named Goliath after a figure from human lore whose strength and ferocity in battle the young gargoyle reminded the prince of.
After the betrayal at the Castle Wyvern lead to the deaths of most of his clan, Goliath allowed himself to be turned to stone with the remaining survivors so that if they ever awoke, it would be together. When the billionaire David Xanatos, of the metropolis of Manhattan on the continent Evangeline, heard rumors of the tales of stone warriors sleeping in a castle across the sea, he used his considerable fortune to purchase the castle - and the gargoyles - and had it transported to Manhattan, breaking the spell in the process. Since awaking, Goliath and his clan have found a new place in the city as its nightly protectors, taking names from the land and eking out an existence alongside humans who fear them and disbelieve their existence. His guide in this new world has been Elisa Maza, the human detective whose loyalty, courage, and willingness to welcome his clan to her city won his trust within nights of his awakening. He has spent nearly two years living his new life in the strange human city, from which he only recently departed on a trip to the island of Avalon, where the eggs of his generational children had grown in the years he had been sleeping as a statue and had formed their own clan. There, Goliath, Elisa, and the gargoyle beast Bronx were joined on their tour of the world by Angela, the biological daughter of Goliath and his former mate, the genocidal Demona, who had changed over the years from his love to his foe. The four were sent by the magic of Avalon to many strange lands where their assistance was needed, seeing much of the world in the process.
When they returned to Manhattan in time to thwart the Fey King Oberon’s attempts to steal longtime enemy Xanatos’ son, Goliath was looking forward to settling in to some modicum of peace with his clan newly expanded by the addition of Angela, but a summons from King Mickey put a stop to that. While Goliath initially had no interest in leaving his protectorate, his territory, or his clan, his experiences with the magic of Avalon finally encouraged him to travel to the Academy to do his part to fight to protect the world, before the Black Mist could reach the island of his children, or his own city.
Personality: Although Goliath is noted (most often by his enemies) for his temper, a better way to describe him would be as a patient person whose patience is regularly pushed past its limits.
This is to be expected, given that Goliath has devoted his entire life to the protection and defense of a species that has given him rejection and contempt in exchange for his efforts. Nevertheless, Goliath is both a warrior and a philosopher, and he lives by his convictions.
His greatest conviction has to do with the concept of protection. Territorial by nature, Gargoyles protect what - and who - is theirs, and among his surviving clan, Goliath takes this aspect of his nature closest to heart. His home and his clan are sacred, and protection of them is the highest calling.
His second conviction is that humanity is worth protecting - or at the very least, worth reaching out to. He interprets the distaste humans have for his kind as fear of the unknown, and maintains a belief that with understanding, peace can grow between their species.
Goliath is intellectual and believes in bettering himself through knowledge, and he is very well read when it comes to literature, history, and philosophy. However, his inclination to look for the good in everyone he knows has cost him dearly in the past in terms of betrayal. He can be manipulated by those who play on his assumption that anyone who has not yet actively done him wrong is good until proven neutral, and for this, his sense of trust has suffered. When he does form a bond of friendship, he is fiercely loyal and protective of individuals in his care.
Although he looks for goodness in people, and although he has incredible patience for humanity as a race, Goliath is still a warrior, and when his temper is roused, his rage is a force to be reckoned with. He lives by a code of honor which keeps killing on the battlefield separate from the slaughter of innocents or disadvantaged enemies - and which keeps both of these things separate from killing in the name of vengeance. A betrayal that leads to the death of a clanmember or the outright murder of one he considers his own are things which can motivate Goliath to commit an honor killing.
At the same time, it is not in his nature to hold a grudge. He is quick to accept genuine displays of remorse, and forgiving to a fault. It takes him a very long time, and a great deal of personal injury, to give up on someone, if he has established prior that there is some good in them.
Aside from his views on violence and revenge killing, Goliath is very open-minded and forward-thinking, both for a gargoyle and for someone born in his time period. This is evident in his acceptance of his feelings for Elisa, a human, with whom he is deeply in love. Once he acknowledged that his feelings for her were stronger than just friendship, it was easy for him to accept that he wanted to be her mate. However, he recognizes that their relationship is not so simple from Elisa’s side of the equation, and so their feelings for each other remain unspoken, at Elisa’s wishes.
Elisa has dealt with this dilemma by reminding herself repeatedly that a relationship between them is impossible. Goliath does not share her coping mechanism. He accepts his love for Elisa, and accepts that his love for her will be a part of his life, whether she will have him as her mate or not.
Greatest Fear: Oh man, which ones hasn’t he already had thrown in his face? That his daughter, Angela, will adopt her mother’s hatred of humanity. That the Manhattan Clan, survivors of the Wyvern massacre, will be killed. That the Avalon Clan, generationally and traditionally his children, will be killed. That all other gargoyles who have managed to survive on Earth will be wiped out. That Demona will successfully carry out her plans to destroy all humans, or manage enough of it to start another open war between humans and gargoyles. That Elisa will choose a good man who will give her the life he cannot. Being smashed in his sleep. He recognizes these fears, and considers them, but does not allow himself to dwell on them, either.
The one fear he has that is too awful even to consider is the notion that some twist of fate may once again strip him of everyone he knows and cares for, and that he will be alone in an alien world without clan, without his species, the last of his kind and thoroughly alone forever.
