Not much to report, really. I don't have any dire need to write anything, but I'm bored so I'm updating livejournal. E3 2006 took place this week (the massive video game convention showcasing all the newest creations) and it looks PS3 and Xbox360 are virtually one-in-the-same, except each uses a different HD DVD format (Sony with Blu-Ray and Xbox with HDDVD), not that anyone really cares. The biggest difference is that PS3 will cost at least $500 for the slimmer version with a 20gig harddrive, and the "good" version of the system requires you shelling out $600 for a 60gig harddrive. Oh, and PS3's controller has some stupid motion-sensor which allows you to slightly tilt and rotate the controller for added control, but only one game shown by Sony incorporates that technology, and the game looks pretty clunky. I get the feeling Sony was just trying to shorten the gap between them and Nintendo and its Wii controller.

Oh, that's right, Nintendo's next-generation platform will be called the "Wii"--pronounced like "Wee". Yeah, absolutely fucking retarded. Anyway, I've known about the name for a while so I'm past it.

The controller for the Wii (or Wii-mote) is entirely motion-sensitive. You can swing it all you want in front of you and the motions will be duplicated on screen. For instance, if you're playing a sword fighting game, you can literally make a top-to-bottom slashing motion with the remote and you'll swing the sword in that manner in the game. You can also (to a degree) use it as a light-gun like the one you use for Duckhunt on the original Nintendo, though I don't think it's quite as accurate as the gun from the impressions I've read.

If I purchase any next-generation system, it's only going to be the Wii, simply because I don't have nearly as much time to invest in video games anymore, and I'd rather invest it in something that lasts longer (e.g. WoW) than the mostly-single player games on consoles, and the Wii is assumedly going to cost considerably less than the Xbox360 or the PS3 because of its weaker hardware (worse graphics). And the games still look like a hell of a lot of fun, and the controller definitely may become a revolutionary device (kudos to those who understand why "revolutionary" is amusing).

Oh, and of course, London in three days... (and we found out today we have to write a minimum 6-page paper on a scene portrayed in one of the performances and its similarities/contrasts with the text!) I'm a-scared but excited at the same time. Spooky. Maybe I'll update from the hotel while I'm there (we have internet access in the lobby).
