That's very interesting, because Lloyd Rose also wrote one of my least favorite Eighth Doctor Adventures, Camera Obscura, which is utterly impenetrable unless you have a good understanding of continuity within the series. I like both Anji and Fitz a lot, through with a series as long a the EDAs they both have moments where they shine and moments where they are made of epic fail.
The City of the Dead is one of the EDAs I don't currently own. I may have to go back to actively hunting some of these online. And if you are ever looking for Eighth Doctor recommendations, I definitely have some favorites among the books.
Yay, City of the Dead! This is my favorite Who book (yet). Unlike many Doctor Who books I've read (and often enjoyed), this one seemed to me like it was actually a genuinely good novel.
Indeed, there is no scientific hand-waving anywhere in the book to explain away the magic - spells and summonings work, and elementals are real.
Oh yeah, definitely. And the next book, Grimm Reality (also, IMO, pretty good) has a bit of hand-waving in that about white holes, but it's still basically a fantasy novel. Doesn't bug me - I'll take it over the NAs' space opera/bad cyberpunk any day.
