I rather liked this book, too. It's funny how fragile Salonika turned out to be, isn't it?

I hadn't seen that book and will look for it the next time I am in London. Certainly the 'modern' Greek goverment's propensity for managing their histories is frustrating - if not reprehensible, but I would hesitate to call Salonika fragile. The last time I was there in 2002, it was doing very well - on its own terms allbeit. In others words slooging along much as it always had

I quite agree that Thessaloniki is doing marvellously of late, but old Salonika seems to be quite dead.
