There is something magical about the great whales, isn't there? We saw many of them in Alaska a few years ago, but the moment that stands out for me was the evening we had dinner by a window in the ship's alternative restaurant... it was late, but it was Alaska in summer so it was still light outside, and a single humpback surfaced right outside our window. We were delighted, watched it rise and descend, and then went back to our meal. It came up again about three minutes later, still right next to us. That whale shadowed out ship, just outside our window, for more than half an hour, following us throughout our dinner, and finally turned off and went away with a last show of its flukes. It was incredible.
