The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers won the first ever Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form in 2003, and the Nebula for Best Script of 2003 (awarded in 2004). It also won two Oscars. I think (although for reasons it has been years since I saw the extended version) the flooding of Orthanc is one of the extended bits. I definitely remember bits that aren't in the theatrical cut.

I don't disagree with you so much on this one as Fellowship, but I do have some thoughts on the effects of Jackson et al doing it this way.
