Platoon won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1986, and also three others, Best Director (Oliver Stone), Best Film Editing and Best Sound. Stone lost for Best Original Screenplay and two of the actors lost for Best Supporting Actor to Michael Caine in Hannah and Her Sisters; it was also unsuccessfully nominated for Best Cinematography. For a long time, my only reference for Platoon was the bit in The Naked Gun where Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley come out of the cinema laughing and hugging. I watched it recently with my boyfriend and kept thinking about Hot Shots! whenever Charlie Sheen appeared, which probably improved it for me.
