I'm a political animal, and I am fascinated by the way that Shakespeare looks at leadership and kingship, what we might today call governance. Many of his plays are about politicians who get it tragically wrong - Brutus, Richard III, Coriolanus, Macbeth. I think Macbeth is much the most interesting. The Light Thickens is still one of my favourite crime novels.

I like it too. Ngaio Marsh's last book, and unlike some other late works by crime writers of her generation, not lacking in quality. I wonder if she was expecting it to be her last, given how it unusually revisits some of the surviving characters from an earlier book.
