I think the only other Holdstock novel I had read was the rather odd one about Newgrange spirals turning up on another planet, probably thirty years ago. Interesting. I tried reading this after hearing good things about it and found it so dull that I stopped reading after a couple chapters.

In case had the same sort of childhood as me he also wrote the novella packaged with the game "Elite".

I read it yonks ago and absolutely loved it. The sequel is a bit disappointing, btw, just in case you're tempted.

It's worth reading the various sequels, by the way - though the ideas in the first are probably fresher, the quality of the writing actually improves later on, so they are much more readable.
