Paddy Ashdown is one of the people I most admire in politics; I voted for him as Lib Dem leader, was a candidate and election agent for the party in Cambridge in 1990 and 1991, and then was the head of the local branch of the Lib Dems in Northern Ireland for several years (a position in no way incompatible with my Alliance Party activities). I was very impressed with Paddy when he visited Queen's at the invitation of the Alliance Party in the mid-90s. Honest, straightforward, and not at all dismissive of the Republicans who came to heckle - he actually engaged with them well, rather stealing their thunder. John Alderdice was also there, and was impressive too, but Paddy was head-and-shoulders above him, and anyone else I've seen speaking.
