I read that nomination list without registering Marcel Theroux was on there - I read a book by him quite a few years ago which was reminiscent of some of Philip Larkin's novels, so maybe my brain just sheered away from his name and Arthur C. Clarke's in close proximity. I'll add that one to my 'to read' list along with the Gwyneth Jones one. Read "The City and the City" last summer and heard China Miéville talking about it at the Festival Hall. Up to then I'd found his work somewhat rich and strange, but that book gave me a bit of a way in (as an avid reader of noir) and since then I've read "The Iron Council" and "Un Lun Dun"; working my way up to trying "Perdido Street Station" again.
