I am middle-aged

Just went and got my eyes tested for bifocals.

(In French they are progressifs, which sounds much more optimistic.)

I think I'm going to have to do this too - I'm finding it increasingly difficult to read things on the computer monitor.

Yup, they're called "progressive lenses" here too.

Thankfully, I've escaped the crows-feet hand of age for now. I know Father Time is waiting in the wings.

They're pretty much called "progressives" here, too. For one thing, most of them now feature a smooth grade across the lens from one level of magnification to the next. For another, they tend to have at least three main levels of magnification.

I've avoided that so far, for which I'm thankful.

I know how you feel! The optometrist at last year's eye exam said I was "borderline" bi-focal. I tried to be optimistic, saying that my eye prescription hasn't changed much in the past 20 years (long-sighted); maybe this new single-focus prescription will last me at least 5 years. "No, it won't," was her reply. She then introduced me to the sales staff as being in denial! (I try to not wear my glasses whenever possible, to keep my eyes not so reliant on them.)
