Iron Man: "Not technically accurate, since it's a gold titanium alloy"

Well, another Hugo-nominated film based on a comic that I had barely heard of. I found the politics stupid to the point of being offensive: I don't think anyone with the slightest notion about Afghanistan could find either the kidnapping plot or the Iron-Man-rescues-the-villagers scene anything other than crude and simplistic. It's not "guns kill people, OMG", it was "Holy CRAP, my weapons are being sold and used WITHOUT REGARD TO WHO USES THEM!"

Tony was an isolated genius, comfortable rich genius, who was basically a good-natured guy who never had any demands (non-intellectual) put on him, and is suddenly thrust into a hellish example of the Real World. For a guy with his character, there's two possible directions he could have gone. One would be to essentially become like Stane: cynical, the world sucks but I'll be on top, or to keep the ideals but become active about it, which is what Iron Man is.

As to "Why kidnap Stark"? in a related comment: because they were hired to do so, as Obadiah Stane was starting to find Tony cramping his style. He didn't die because the hired guns recognized who they had and that he was a better bargaining chip alive than dead.

Yeah, the politics are simple. It's a comic book. Here's some bad guys trying to take over some country/make a political point/etc. somewhere, Our Hero gets involved with them, eventually Our Hero confronts them.

It's the best comic book movie I've ever seen. (Batman Begins runs a very close second. Dark Knight... is too dark for me, one of the very few movies I'll say was a good flick, and I will never watch again).

I feel the same way - a really enjoyable movie.
