Honestly, even at the rate you read, safe yourself any more Turtledove. They're all like that, bloated, unimaginative obsessive retellings of our history in an alternate setting.

yeah, I get the impression that Turtledove is a writer of schlock, sometimes enjoyable, sometimes not, who somehow rose above himself with that Down In The Bottomlands. Not that I have actually read anything by him, mind, though I keep being tempted by those Alien-Space-Lizards-invade-during-World-War-2 books.
