Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell just died at the age of 90. Even if you don't know who he was, he might very well have had a major impact on your life. He's the legislator who sponsored the bill creating the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, which they renamed Pell Grants after I left college. Between the time they were created and the time he retired about 10 years ago, 54 million people got federal funding for college, and I'm one of them.
I saw him get an honorary doctorate at the New School for Social Research when my BFF got her bachelor's (Ornette Coleman also got an honorary doctorate too). (Though I could have sworn his name was Claude.)
