A new place in Davis Square...

Jul 04, 2010 23:17

Well, it's been a while since I've updated. I'll probably post some stuff about our recent trip to Massachusetts over the next few days. This post though, is especially for my friends who hang out in Davis Square.

Thursday night, I went to the friends and family soft opening of a cool new place in Davis Square, in the old Sacco's Bowl Haven, 45 Day Street, called "The Flatbread Company". The restaurant is part of a small chain of pizza restaurants, which are owned by a partnership, 50% of which is my Uncle Patrick's old friend John Meehan. Those of you who have met Patrick (the crazy oil painter), will know that his friends tend to be eccentric, and John's no exception. He's got a habit of calling everybody "Jim", for one thing. For another, he's passionate about food. I was, therefore, pleased to finally get the chance to try the food at one of his places, and was expecting the pizza to be good.

In fact, I was amazed at the place. They've kept (and restored) 10 of the original candlepin lanes, while creating an amazing space. 2 (or was it 3?) handmade woodburning ovens (which were built in part by folks in the neighborhood at an oven-building party) are open and visible, and the color scheme (rust and sky blue) is very old new england. The pizzas themselves were wonderful. I was particularly impressed by the pulled-pork pizza, but every one I tried was very, very good. I asked John's brother Pat Meehan (who I think went to high-school with my uncle, and who does the books for the chain), where they got the pulled pork, and was surprised to hear that they "we make it here in the ovens"(!). I was even more surprised when he started to name the (local, organic) farms where they obtained all the meats and vegetables, and talk about how they're trying to support local farms.

So, in short, a cool place, run by cool people, with good food, good beer, and bowling. I know this sounds like an advertisement, but seriously folks, this one is worth supporting. Oh, and if you see John, tell him Jim sent you.
