Info on these colleges?
Does anyone have any info on Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad? How good is it? I know that it's a bonafide institution set up by the Govt. of India, but is it really a good place? What about the Technical University of UP?
Someone from there has applied to Uni of B'ham for a PhD and I've been asked if it's a good place, i.e., are the straight As that this candidate's got worth real As? I'm just a wee bit wary of the quality of the institution. I've never seen any paper from their institution and nor have I seen anyone of their faculty on any programme committee. The candidate, on his part, hasn't been very communicative. He's been sent several requests for more information on email and he hasn't replied to any one of them. Now the administration wants to know whether it's worth waiting or not.
My opinion has been asked because I'm adjudged to be good. My dilemma is that if I recommend someone and he turns to be not very good, the faculty's opinion of students from India will drop (on the basis of one sample, i know. but that's how these things go). On the other hand, I could be potentially closing the door on a good candidate's future, just because I haven't heard of his college.
