Fire! in the kitchen

Today's been a day of embarrassments. In the morning, I was showing a relative new-comer around the research kitchen, and instead of taking a cup from the common stock, I took someone's personal cup. As soon as I had poured the coffee into the cup, the real owner came along and pointed out that I had his cup. Egad.

In the evening, some firemen had come over to give us instructions on the dos and donts of cooking and what to do, in case of a fire. We all looked bored and nodded impatiently for him to get on with it. At about 10pm, I felt really hungry and decided to make myself some sausages. The instructions on the packet clearly said, "15-16 mins on the grill". So I turned on the grill, set a timer on my phone and went back to my room. After about 15 mins, the kitchen was filled with smoke. Opening the grill, revealed that the pan's handle was on fire! Yikes! Quickly opened all windows and turned on the ventilation fan to the maximum, hoping that the smoke detectors didn't go off! Thankfully, they didn't. But all of my flatmates came in to the kitchen and had a good laugh. Oh well, all's well that ends well. Will have to buy a new pan for the grill, though :(
