Things that go bang in the night

Yes I know what time it is. And yes I have to be up early, but I'm at my witts end.

I was going to bed, late, I know, as per usual, around 2am and all of a sudden, clearly, loudly and distinctly came a banging sound. Two bang between a slight pause as if someone or something was banging on an oak door or cupboard. My throat goes dry. Thoughts rush through my head.

Who is that? What is that? Where is it coming from? Is it the wind? Is it the house? Is it the plumbing? Is that a burglar? Are they armed? Can I arm myself?

I threw open the door, whilst standing back and peered into the corridor. I leapt at the nearest light and turned it on. I inspected, the airing cupboard, toilet and bathroom before moving on down the hall to the landing. Turning on the lights I cautiously crept down the stair well. Anxious not to put myself out in to harms way. From a distance peering round corners and looking into courners where someone may be lurking.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs I turned on the hall lights and the out door lights. Yes I know if anyone was outside they would either leave or freeze where they were, but that's what I wanted. I then checked in the study, lounge and cautiously entered the kitchen. Finally I went to the conservatory to double, tripple, quadrple check the doors were locked.

The entire house was locked tighter than a drum, but all the while the banging continued. Not constantly, but always after I'd finish this round of investigation. I suspected another lodger, but dismissed that. Surprisingly one woke up, I hope not because of my prowling, and gruffly told me it wasn't them. They skutled down to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water to soothe their coughing.

Only now, 4am has the banging stopped and I can finally get some rest. I guess I worry because the house, a beautiful example of a turn of the century house, I forget what period, possibly Edwardian but I may be wrong, has lead pained windows. For those who don't know what these are, this is glass held in by lead strips. Essentially too much pressure from your hand will crack the glass or dislodge it. Not exactly the safest or environmentally friendly beast, but it looks goregous.

I will have to inform my land lady of this development. Now to bed, with me for I must wake up early today!

-=Edit=-
It was the lodger who categorically denied it was them. According to the other lodger she often has nightmares and bangs the wall. Apparently her father past away when she was young.

Now this may seem a little strange, but my friend, who used to live where I do now, said that the landlady at times will take on a patient and allow the patient to live in the house whilst she helps them with therapy. My landlady is a full certificated thearpist of sorts. Oh the joy.

-=Edit=-
Said lodger left me a charming note saying how I am giving her 'bad vibes' and that I ought to take that into consideration and be more curtious when out prowling about late at night.

I confronted, explained and apologised, but I also wrote it down, before I decided to do it in person. My landlady was very impressed with my response, she thought the letter odd too.
