One of my favourite scenes from American Psycho. It sets the tone of the movie well, the routine described/shown is completely ridiculous and also serves as a good little introduction to the lead character Patrick Bateman. And I love Christian Bale's voice-over here, it's somehow stupidly soothing to me lol. I wouldn't consider this spoilery since it's from about 5 minutes into the film, but it's definitely NSFW.
Random stuff from the Director's Commentary by Mary Harron on the DVD about this scene:
(italics are her own words)
* Mary Harron described the apartment as the pristine white Bateman apartment, like the perfect 80s white box and how the sound crew did not even allow traffic noise in, making it seem like a hermetically sealed box. She also points out that the apartment looks like it came out of a photograph from Architectural Digest, and how there are no personal details showing at all.
* She told her production crew that she wanted the kitchen to be stainless steel, like a morgue and the result was practically perfect.
* During the exercise scene, she commented: This is the body that Christian created out of a skinny English form through months of incredibly obsessive exercise and working out and diet. "skinny English form" -- this totally made me laugh LOL.
* She also mentioned that a lot of girls on the set came and watched the monitor while we were shooting [the shower scene], like a little gathering. Those were some very lucky girls >O
* I've always thought this scene in the film encapsulates the overall theme very succiently with the mask, and it was excellent to hear Mary Harron saying something along the same lines too :D
If I had to say one scene about what this movie is about, it's this scene where he puts on the mask. He's looking at himself in the mirror and what does he see? [...] And this moment where he takes off the mask, I was so worried this wouldn't work. It's our first take and he pulls it off. I was like oh no, is it going to come off in pieces? Pulls it off and it's perfect, all in one. And he pulls off the mask, and reveals his face and it's another mask. To me, that's the most crucial image in the film.
