Chapter 1- An apple a day… Chapter 2-…keeps the doctor away?
It was lunch time and Junior was still singing Happy Birthday to Spoony and Clonesano. Clonesano had agreed that birthdays were special occasions so Junior had been given a large pace of chocolate cake which he had eaten very quickly. His face was covered in chocolate and Spoony was starting to think that it was a mistake to give him cake as he seemed even more hyper than usual.
Clonesano and Junior were planning to go the park together, after they finished eating. Spoony considered using his new teleporter to visit Linkara. He couldn’t wait to see Linkara’s face when he appeared out of thin air.
Suddenly a figure moved in the corner of his eye. Someone who was supposed to be locked in his head. Spoony froze in place. How had Doctor Insano managed to appear without Spoony feeling him coming? That never happened nowadays.
Junior didn’t notice anything. He finished his song then went to get more cake. Clonesano, however, instantly noticed the change in Spoony’s body language and when Junior came bouncing back to the table he said,
“Son, go pick out a book and I’ll read it to you when we get the park.” Junior nodded and bounced out of the room cake forgotten. When he was gone Clonesano asked, “Do you need any help?” Spoony shook his head.
“Naw. He just caught me by surprise that’s all. I’ll deal with it.” Clonesano nodded and got up to leave knowing Spoony wanted to face his personal demon alone.
“I’ll just be in hear if you need me,” Clonesano said pausing in the doorway before going through.
“Sending that worthless clone away?” Doctor Insano asked walking until he was standing in front of Spoony separated only by the table. He sounded really angry about something. “Good! I’m the real Doctor Insano. He is just a wonabe.” He still looked and sounded as if he was a bad signal on a TV screen but he was much clearer than normal. Spoony just starred at him.
“And the way the two of you treat my son is an outrage! He should be helping to destroy the world NOT making things out of double sided sticky tape and going to the park!”
“How did you get here? I didn't feel a thing?” Spoony asked finally finding his voice. For just a second, Doctor Insano looked like he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t. A moment later the look was gone and Doctor Insano looked as if the bad signal had just got distinctly worse.
“It’s because I’m getting stronger and you’re getting weaker,” Doctor Insano said in his normal voice. He no longer sounded angry, just confident. Spoony had the feeling that Doctor Insano only said it because it was the sort of thing he always said. He rarely took any of Insano's schemes seriously. And Insano knew it. Maybe the Doctor was only saying it to hide the fact that it was true. Spoony shuddered.
“Get out of my head!” he yelled and the image of Doctor Insano became a little more transparent.
“Believe me I would if I could. Unfortunately I live there,” Insano said. Spoony reached desperately for an apple. He grabbed one from the fruit bowl and took a big bite.
“Not another ap…” Doctor Insano said as he disappeared. The apple thing had started as a joke but it really seemed to work. Whether it was due to his determination to control Doctor Insano when he ate the apple or that he associated it with beating Insano he didn’t know. All he knew was it seemed to work.
Spoony was alone in the room again. He shuddered. Doctor Insano shouldn’t be able to appear before him that easily. He had mental defences to stop this sort of thing. Maybe the defences were getting weaker? He hadn’t really given them much thought recently. He decided to cheek.
Closing his eyes Spoony entered the space in his head were he kept Doctor Insano locked up. Spoony looked though the bars of the locked door behind which Insano was imprisoned. Doctor Insano could project an image of himself outside the prison that held him in his particularly strong moments but he couldn’t actually leave himself.
The evil doctor was asleep on the floor of his dark cell. His recent defeat by Spoony meant that he would have to rest to regain his strength. The chains that held him in place were as strong as ever and when Spoony tried the door, he found it locked as always. Even if Doctor Insano had been awake he couldn't get out.
Insano might be under lock and key, but Spoony doubled his defenses anyway. The door thickened, the room containing Insano became smaller, more chains were added to hold the doctor firmly to the floor and the room containing Insano was moved to the end of a long corridor that could only be entered by another locked door.
Satisfied that Doctor Insano was safely secured Spoony retreated from the mental prison and opened his eyes. This had probably been a fluke, he tried to reassure himself, nothing to worry about. He was blowing it out of proportion. All the same he resolved to keep a closer eye on his prisoner.
He got up and walked into the living room. Clonesano looked over at him from were he was sat on the sofa.
“Everything ok?” he asked Spoony.
“Of course it is,” Spoony reassured. Clonesano looked unconvinced. “He just caught me a little off-guard that’s all.”
“Are you still going to visit Linkara?” Clonesano asked. Spoony thought for a moment.
“Yes. I’m not letting him spoil my birthday or ruin my life,” he said. “He’s not getting free so why should I change my plans?”
“Good point.”
At that point Junior came flying into the room carrying a book.
“Reeeeeeeeeeeee,” he squealed jumping into his father’s arms.
“‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit,’” Clonesano said looking at the book his son had picked. “Good choice.”
***
“This comic sucks!” Linkara gestured at the comic he held toward the camera. “It’s poorly written, badly drawn, half the time I had no idea what was…”
There was a crackle in the air. A moment later a figure appeared in mid air and dropped to the ground with a thud and an “Uff.”
“SSSSSSS,” Linkara started to say reaching for his magic gun. He had actually pulled it out and aimed it at the intruder before he recognised Spoony, sprawled on the floor. “... ugar.” Linkara finished.
“You take that no swearing thing too seriously,” Spoony said sitting up and then getting unsteadily to his feet. Linkara just stared at him. “Um would you mind aiming that gun somewhere else?” Linkara looked down and found he was still aiming his gun at Spoony’s head.
“Oh, sorry. I thought you were another super villain that wanted me dead,” Linkara replied as he holstered his gun. He got up and turned off the camera, before helping his friend sit on the futon next to him. “What the heck man. You scared me to death,”
“I just thought I’d pop by and say thanks for my birthday present. Thanks. It’s nice to have some descent games for a change,” Spoony said.
“You’re welcome,” Linkara said, still in a state of shock at his best friend’s sudden appearance.
“I should've guessed you would panic when I showed up. You must be sick of people breaking in. You really have the worst security in the world.”
“No I don’t,” Linkara retorted. Spoony stared at him incredulously.
“Dude. Doctor Insano used to break in every other week…”
“You have a spare key. Which meant so did he.”
“You were teleported out of this room and kept prisoner for a month by Lord Vyce…”
“Superior technology.”
“Linksano lived in your home for months and you never suspected a thing…”
“He could jump from one universe to another.”
“And finally 90’s kid is always braking in and crashing in your spare room!”
“Ok, you’ve got me on that,” Linkara conceded. “How did you get here?”
“Insano’s present,” Spoony gestured at his chest were Linkara noticed a star fleet badge was pinned. “I need to work on my coordinates though. It isn’t fun materialising in mid air.”
“Insano gave you a teloporter and you used it?” Linkara asked frowning. “Anything could have happened!”
Spoony crossed his arms. “I've told you before Linkara, he's not like the original. You should know that better than anyone.”
Linkara sighed. He didn’t want to have this conversation again. Linkara didn’t trust Insano in any of his incarnations but Spoony was convinced that the clone wasn’t evil. He had given up arguing: it only created bad feelings. “Spoony may even be right,” Linkara thought. “In all his life the clone hasn’t tried to kill anyone. I just find it hard to believe he’s changed that much.” Out loud he said,
“Alright Spoony. It just makes me nervous. Besides, I wouldn't trust anything he made not to blow up from sheer incompetence.”
Spoony felt the ‘incompetence’ comment was uncalled for, but it was, unfortunately, pretty accurate. He didn't blame Linkara for being suspicious, so he just shrugged it off and said, “Well at least I made it here in one piece.”
“Well now that you’re here what do you want to do?”
“We’ve both got teleporters now so let’s go sight seeing. “This thing will save me a fortune in travel expenses. How about we go to Australia first?”
