"You Were Cool" Lyrics

This is a song with the same four chords
I use most of the time
When I've got something on my mind
And I don't want to squander the moment
Trying to come up with a more complicated riff
To say what I want to say

People were mean to you
But I always thought you were cool
Clicking down the concrete hallways
In your spiked heels
Back in high school

It's good to be young let's not kid ourselves
It's better to pass on through those years and come out the other side
With our hearts still beating
Having stared down demons
Come back breathing

People were mean to you
But I always thought you were cool
Clicking down the concrete hallways
In your spiked heels
Back in high school

You deserved better than you got
Someone's gotta say it sometime 'cause it's true
People should have told you you were awesome
Instead of taking advantage of you
I hope you love your life
Like I love mine
I hope the painful memories only flex their power over you
a little of the time
We held onto hope that a better day is coming
When we did we were right
I hope the people who did you wrong
Have trouble sleeping at night

People were mean to you
But I always thought you were cool
Clicking down the concrete hallways
In your spiked heels
Back in high school

If anyone can't identify with this song, they're blatant liars or totally incorrect. At first listen, without really paying due attention to the lyrics, I felt like it was speaking directly to me - I've got a lot of hang-ups about those years. After a few listens, I realized it was speaking to everyone - every single person who ever went to high school has always harbored a small regret in the fact that they never said this to someone that they attended school with. I wasn't "cool" in high school, but rather than this being a narcissism thing, it also speaks about the people that I thought were cool and got shit on. It also speaks about the people that I would have thought were cool if I hadn't been caught up in fucking cliques, just like everyone else was in high school. The song's content could easily be conceived as normal high school class war - the cool kids were always on top, but deep down a lot of them thought the kids who never got any attention but were still nice people were still cool. Maybe there were people who talked shit on other kids that don't regret it, and wouldn't, even if you threw it in their faces 20 years later. Those people are a small minority.

If you went to high school, and you can safely say there's absolutely no one that you could walk up to in 2010 and say, "People were always mean to you, but I always thought you were cool", you're either a perfect or terrible person. If you're the former, thank you. If you're the latter, fuck you. If you're the rest of the world who wishes they could run into somebody and subsequently have the audacity to actually speak these words to them, welcome to the club - we already have our anthem.
