IMDb voters love "black movies," Part II

Feb 05, 2007 23:03

I can use Black History Month as an excuse to do this, but really, the racism on the IMDb boards and voting has been bothering me for a while. The STOMP THE YARD message boards are just gross.

Here's an exchange I got into tonight. I'll update the post when, and if, it progresses.

matt-j-barber (responding to some other guy):
Hold on a second...
Glory 8/10 on IMDB I suppose white people just now turned racist.
To Kill a Mockingbird 8.5/10
Hotel Rwanda 8.3/10

I'm sorry what were you saying about white people being racist?

ME:
Glory and To Kill a Mockingbird are both told from a white character's perspective, and depend upon said white character's arc. Matthew Broderick and Gregory Peck play the white saviors of black people. None of the 3 films deal with contemporary black pop culture, which is what IMDb voters are really threatened by. They don't get it, so they deal with it by trying to vote it out of the equation. Henceforth, racism.

Let's take a look at how much IMDb voters tolerate "black movies." I'm not saying all these movies are good, but they're nowhere near how comparative "white movies" are rated.

Soul Plane 3.2
ATL 3.7
Roll Bounce 4.5

Racist (real username withheld):
Can I assure you and your fellow Afro-limited friends that white people are not worried in the least that STOMP THE YARD will replace GONE WITH THE WIND as a classic. We see your movies and laugh at you - they are made for idiots.
You simply can't follow anything more complex.

I used to tutor black physics students in college, and they had that look on their faces throughout. I once proposed to a publisher that they publish a cartoon version of physics for blacks.

ME:
And I can assure you that most IMDb posters don't care about GONE WITH THE WIND. They're insecure young white males in love with Jessica Alba. But most of them aren't gay. They like LORD OF THE RINGS and SIN CITY, escapist movies that have nothing to do with hiphop, sports and secure guys with hot girlfriends. Y'know, the very things that are threatening about STOMP THE YARD and TORQUE.

As frightening as the idea of you getting paid to teach anyone anything happens to be, I guess it's better to have you securely on these message boards. That way you can post 45 times a day about why you hate black people. Here you can be prolific. It only requires a lack of life, friends and, in your case, the impotent drive of racial hatred.
