Character's Full Name: Pique
Series: Princess Tutu
Gender: Female
Age: Not really specified, but about 12 or 13
Personality:
Pique is usually a very bright and cheerful person, willing to make friends with anyone decent and to defend those friends in her straightforward way. She and Lilie degrade Ahiru a lot, making fun of her dancing and her crush on Mytho. Despite this, however, Pique is, however, a loyal and good friend; teasing people is only in good fun for her, and she rarely does what she doesn't enjoy. She has a crush on an upperclassman from their school, Fakir, (supposedly for his “brooding” attitude and “dark” persona) and is a member of the so-called "Fakir Faction" at their arts school, Kinkan Academy.
Pique can be very romantic; she loves fairy tales, as well as singing and dancing, and at times she can be a bit silly in daydreaming. Along with this, however, she is tough; she doesn’t like taking no for an answer, and doesn’t like it when people give up on anything. Although this sometimes does get herself and her friends in trouble, it very often proves helpful when Pique is helping a friend, since she will never give up on trying to help someone who needs it. She is very driven to do well in what she loves, especially ballet.
Because she doesn’t like giving up, she strives to make sure that no matter what she does, she does it well. She can seem a bit shallow (possibly due to being infatuated with Fakir when she doesn’t really know him), but once you get to know her, it’s very obvious that she is anything but. Sometimes her teasing does cross the line from fun to cruel, but she always recognizes when it does and apologizes for it. Other times, her teasing can seem harsh, when all she’s doing is trying to help her friend succeed in what they love to do. Despite her initial appearance to those who don’t know her, she is a fiercely devoted friend who only wants her friends to succeed.
Fairy Tale/Myth/Legend: The Nutcracker
Role: Nutcracker
Kingdom Territory of Origin: Northern Kingdom Territory [I assume North = European. If that’s not right, go ahead and tell me.]
Adaptation:
[Note: I’m basing my adaptation off the original story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, not Tchaikovsky’s ballet.]
Long ago, there lived a prince named Patipair. He was the most handsome man for miles around. Eyes like azure, teeth like pearls, and skin like alabaster. But this story isn’t about Prince Patipair. And yet, were it not for him, there wouldn’t be a story.
One day, Patipair’s mother was preparing the King’s sausage for dinner. According to the king, none of the cooks could ever prepare it correctly, so the duty fell on her shoulders. The Queen of Mice, who smelled the cooking meat, snuck through a hole in the wall and begged to have a tiny morsel. She claimed that since they were both royalty that there would be no harm in her having one bite. The Queen, seeing no harm, agreed. But the wicked Mouse Queen tricked her, and called all of her children forth to feast. By the time the last mouse had scampered away, not a speck of sausage was left.
The King was furious and demanded that the court inventor, Drosselmeyer, and his niece, Pique, invent mouse traps to catch the Mouse Queen and her children. Enraged, the Mouse Queen swore that she would take her revenge out on Prince Patipair. Patipair’s parents had his bed surrounded by cats, with seven nurses to keep them awake at all hours. But, inevitably, the nurses fell asleep, followed by the cats. Seizing her chance, the Mouse Queen turned handsome Patipair into an ugly nutcracker.
The King blamed Drosselmeyer and his niece and gave them four weeks to find a cure. As the deadline approached, Drosselmeyer, desperate, went to consult his friend, the court astrologer. Together, they discovered that Patipair could only be cured if he ate the Crackatook nut after it had been cracked open by a girl’s teeth. The girl must then hand it to him with her eyes closed and take seven steps backward without stumbling. The King ordered that the two men, along with Pique, were to set out to find the Crackatook nut. Once they returned, every woman in the kingdom was allowed to try to crack the nut, and whoever was able to do so would be married to Patipair. None succeeded.
Pique, seeing how sad Prince Patipair was as a nutcracker, decided to try. She cracked the nut easily and, eyes closed, handed it to Patipair, who returned to his handsome self upon eating it. Pique began taking her backward steps, making it to the sixth step. On the seventh, however, she tripped over the Mouse Queen, killing her, and stumbled. Because of this, Patipair’s curse fell on her head, changing her into an ugly nutcracker, with a large head and wide grinning mouth. Upon seeing poor Pique, the ungrateful Prince refused to marry her and had her throw out of the castle, along with her uncle Drosselmeyer.
Years later, on Christmas Eve, Drosselmeyer granted his godson Fritz an ugly nutcracker, with a large head, a wide grinning mouth, and dressed as a princess would be. Fritz was delighted with his new toy. Now he had a fair damsel for his knights to rescue, even though she wasn’t exactly “fair”. He and his sister Clara took turns playing with the nutcracker until Clara accidentally broke its jaw. To apologize, she helped Fritz bandage it up, and Drosselmeyer promised to mend its jaw in the morning.
When everyone else went off to bed, Fritz asked if he could play with his soldiers and the nutcracker for a little while longer. His parents found nothing wrong with this, so they agreed, leaving him to play alone. After everyone else was asleep, the grandfather clock began to chime. Suddenly, the living room was invaded by mice, lead by their leader, the seven-headed Mouse King. Startled, Fritz trips and breaks the glass on the door of the cupboard, cutting his arm. To his even greater surprise, the dolls and soldiers come to life, preparing to fight the mice. And leading them is the Nutcracker, a twig from the Christmas tree as her only weapon.
At first, the battle is in favor of the dolls. But soon things take a turn for the worst, and the mice overpower the poor dolls. Fritz, watching from beside the cupboard, sees the evil Mouse King trying to take Nutcracker prisoner. Determined to help, he pulls off his shoe and hurls it at the Mouse King. During this, however, he trips and hits his head, passing out.
[This is the point where she will start in Mukashi.
Note: Obviously, I changed a few things around. Princess Pirlipat is now Prince Patipair, Clara and Fritz change roles (even though Clara isn’t as much of a jerk as Fritz was), etc. Another thing I changed was that in the original, the Crackatook could only be cracked by a man who had never shaved or worn boots. I couldn’t find any way to translate this except for saying the girl had to be a virgin, which I figured would be a tiny bit obvious and overdone, so I removed that bit. The rest of it is the same.
I’m keeping the ending, where the Nutcracker is made handsome/beautiful again because someone swears to love him/her no matter what he/she looks like. If this ever occurs in Mukashi, it will only be after extensive talks between muns, and it will be after a significant amount of time (ex: 6 - 8 months or a year).
Oh! And she's the size of a nutcracker, so...don't step on her XD. The only time she'll be a regular sized human is when the spell is broken]
Current Area of Residence: A small town near the border between Northern Kingdoms Territory and Axis Mundi, but she will be leaving and venturing further into Axis Mundi.
