When worlds collide...
I just read a story posted on the SF Weekly website, about Michael "The Monster" Brandon. "The rise and fall of the Monster". Not only did I have no idea he was a recovered crystal meth addict, I also didn't know he was in serious trouble due to his choices after relapsing.
Having written a couple research papers for my Health Ed (ie, Public Health) classes on gay men and crystal meth, and about to do it again for my Community Nursing class (as well as having an ex who was in recovery from crystal and relapsed while we were together), this article fascinated me. The honesty of all those quoted is so needed still.
I find it disheartening to see that one of the most prominent poster boys and spokesmen for the SFDPH campaign around crystal meth and safe sex has relapsed. It makes me wonder how many others who were in his shoes will see what has happened and think, "Well, if he can't do it, how can I? Why should I?"
At the same time, the Psych Nurse in me is wondering what in his brain and his past has brought him back to this? Also wondering how many other adult film performers are still using regularly...
As you can see, I'm saddened and fascinated at the same time.
