Paladin came in with the laundry, which reminded me of something I'd been thinking about earlier that day.
.
"Oh, and new rule today," I said.

Your debate about the nature of games is one I've been over a few times. It, and peoples feelings about winning and losing is a lot of why my friends tend to only play two styles of games with me. First, where they can gang up, and second where it is co-op, and admittedly the latter is more popular. I find games to be a wonderful way to spark our education and recognition in an imaginary environment, where we can find and face problems on a more neutral ground. Unfortunately, this can detract from some of the pace of games and some people can get a little bent out of shape about it.
I would say hearing who you are playing with is at least half the game, as it is as much to learn of our self, as it is to interact and engage. That is at least a snapshot of how I see it.

It sounds like both you and hibiscus are working on communication. Hibiscus also sounds like he has some trouble hearing him self, but as you said, that is for him. That he enjoys his work and finds solace in it though is a wondrous thing as many people miss this aspect in their life. I wish you both luck in sharing, and hope you enjoyed the game.
