This morning was cold - upper 30s, with a strong gusty wind. I got to walk in it a lot, too, because I went out to lunch from work, so that was more being outside in the wind. The temperature kept falling, too, and I think the wind chill was 10 degrees cooler than the air temperature.
When I left work about 4:45, freezing rain had been coming down lightly but steadily for hours. I had to scrape a tough layer of ice off my windshields before I could drive. At that point the car said the temperature was 30° (32° is freezing in Fahrenheit), so ice was on parked cars but the roads were still just wet. (I didn't cross any bridges, though, so those may have already been icing.)
I stopped at a friend's house and picked up a trunkful of fire wood. I had considered stopping at the grocery store for a few things, but the parking lots were packed! I won't starve, so I didn't stop. Cantata rehearsal was canceled, too, so I just came home. I did a few things outside, too, and discovered that ice was just beginning to build up on the driveway.
After building a fire, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to rearrange furniture and put up the Christmas tree. So I turned on a favorite movie (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) and have been working away since then. The rain has been falling steadily, too - both freezing rain and sleet. It's the strangest sound - a sort of hissing - from the tiny pellets of ice hitting a hard surface. The sidewalk is starting to whiten.
Glad I'm not going anywhere tomorrow! (Unless the roads clear enough to have rehearsal!) Although I may go for a walk, provided the sidewalks aren't super slippery.
