A young coworker of mine passed away this morning from a stroke. He was young too, only a few years older than me. He hadn't worked here long but he was always such a kind, nice guy, he moved to the area to take care of his father while the rest of his family stayed back where he was from, someplace in the south I think (Again, I didn't know him that well, we just worked together a few times). However, a lot of other people at the store knew him better than I did and they were very torn up about it. A couple of my managers were crying when they told us.
My other manager called our regional manager to see if there was a way we could shut the store down for two hours so that those who wanted to could attend the service. She told him no. Now, that's not the part that bothers me so much really because honestly, that's how retail is. What bothers me most was the way she SAID no, something along the lines of: You are already really behind in hours this week so no, you need to make up your losses for the week. We need to save the eight hours you just gained for a real emergency. (By eight hours she meant the hours that my coworker was going to be in but obviously is not now)
She didn't have to say it that way.
