Just saw Spamalot! at the Bule Theatre in Denver. Pretty damn good. Huge spectacle. Good actors, great singers, phenomenal use of projector. The best part of the show was simply seeing the amazing huge-scale type production with hydraulics, fog, enough lighting instruments to fully cover the stage, and lav mikes that never fail. For all that was wonderful, I felt it lacking. It could have been that I already knew half the jokes from MP and the Holy Grail so they weren't funny on stage. But then again, there were scenes like with Prince Herbert that were exactly like the movie, but I found hilarious. Maybe that's what you get for actors having to do a show so frequently, no novelty. I don't know. Maybe musical theatre in general isn't that captivating to me. Although, the chorus girls were awesome. I would so love to sing and dance and do high kicks for a living. But I don't care enough to be so self-conscious and obsessive about the way my body looks.
Therefore, the dinner I had at a Moroccan restaurant in the Springs was the highlight of my day. OMG was it great! The six-course meal was delicious at every point. But, wait. First you have to take off your shoes and you are seated on cushions on the floor around a chest-level table. After you order, they wash your hands with warm water. First course, a lamb lentil soup with bread. Oh, and no utensils. Eat with your hands, baby. Next, a "salad" but it's nothing we would think of as salad. It's differently spiced carrots, green beans, eggplant, and cous-cous. A pallet cleanser of lettuce and pineapple in rose and orange blossom water. Wonderful. Fourth, a pastry bread, very flaky, with cinnamon and powdered sugar on top with, get this, chicken, egg, and almond in the center. Mmmmmmmmm. Then your main course, after pallet cleanser. I had lamb with raisins and peaches. So good. Great sauce and the lamb just fell apart. My mom got chicken and artichoke. The artichoke was the best I've ever tasted. Then another pallet cleanser and wash your hands again and spray them with rose and orange blossom water to get rid of the spices before dessert: baklava and mint tea. *sigh* So satisfying and tasty.
During the meal I wondered what other cultures have a pallet cleanser in between courses. Sushi has ginger. French have sorbet. And that's all I know of. That would be something interesting to research.
Then: belly dancer! That was cool and I got to get up and try it. It's hard, but fun. Plus, who needs to lap dance when you can belly dance! It's so cool and seductive, but no touching. Just watch and drool, then pounce later! Hah!
I definitely go more for my buck with the dinner and dance than with the touring Broadway show. So the moral of the story is, find your niche and enjoy it.
