Summary: The first in a new series of one shots. Hyunseung never believed Missed Connections adverts could work till he meets a dark eyed stranger in a coffee shop.

Hyunseung sits in a warm patch of sun near the window, golden rays bouncing from his soft brown curls. On the small table in front of him sits an almost-finished crossword puzzle and a steaming mug of caramel latte. The coffee shop is quiet, and the atmosphere is cosy; the perfect moment of tranquillity before he has to meet his hyper-active best friends. There’s a man with his back to him just a few tables over; they’re the only ones in the shop so far. Hyunseung prides himself for being an early riser. He stares down at the worn book in front of him, brows creased and eyes narrowed because this last question has been evading him for weeks and he can’t leave it unanswered.

7 Across. Another name for the western playing card depicting a court jester (5 Letters)

A chair leg scrapes across the tiled floor, the only sound in the deserted coffee shop and Hyunseung glances up on a whim. He’s met with chocolate brown eyes, a lopsided half smile and the frantic thumping of his own heart. A flush stains his cheeks so he quickly reaches for his coffee, lips curling around the rim to hide his own smile. The stranger’s lips turn up in the corners a little more and Hyunseung forces his eyes back to the book. Think, Hyunseung,  think!

Yoseob bursts in some 20 minutes later, a breeze of cool air following in his wake. There are leaves in his hair and Hyunseung doesn’t want to know how they got there. The few customers that had since arrived look up from their morning dose of caffeine, some glaring in Yoseob’s direction. The chocolate-eyed stranger just stares. The petite blonde passes the male with brown eyes and plump lips, almost knocking him out with his oversized messenger bag in the process. The stranger quirks a brow in Hyunseung’s direction, his face at level with Yoseob’s hip by the time the boy gets closer. ‘Seung-Hyung!’ Chirps Yoseob. He reaches out and steals the last few dregs of Hyunseung’s coffee, noisily clattering the cup back onto the table.

Yoseob follows the direction of Hyunseung’s gaze to the lone man and takes in the black jeans and black polo. There’s a white and red logo on his chest that neither recognise. He must be going to work. ‘Let’s go, Hyung! You know how Kikwang-ah gets when we’re late to the gym’ Yoseob tugs at his sleeve, almost pulling Hyunseung from his seat. The elder rises, a little slower than Yoseob would like and sweeps the puzzle book into his bag.

The blonde leads drags him towards the door, passing the man in black’s table on the way. Hyunseung tries to shake off Yoseob’s hand. It doesn’t usually bother him when his friends are touchy feely - they’ve always been that way, but under those dark, watchful eyes he feels the sudden urge to put a distance between them. He catches the stranger’s eye as they pass his table. He’s stunning up close, rounded cheeks and full lips. A pink tongue sweeps over those lips, wiping away the remnants of foam. Hyunseung feels his breath being stolen.

The following Saturday finds them at Kikwang’s apartment. Hyunseung sits with his puzzle book, still trying to figure out the last answer whilst the two younger boys flip through a spread out newspaper on the floor. Yoseob lingers on the classifieds for a few minutes. ‘Puppy for Free’ Catches his eye and he hums for a moment before ringing the advert with a red marker. ‘You’re getting a puppy?’ Asks Kikwang; turning the page before Yoseob sees the other free pet adds. He already has two cats and a tortoise. He doesn’t need any more pets.

‘Perhaps’ He murmurs in response. They flick through the rest, Kikwang circling several gym and weight lifting equipment adverts before they finally reached the Missed Connections adverts. Yoseob is about to flip the page when Kikwang stops him, slamming a large hand down on the page. ’No!’ Hyunseung looks up from his puzzle book, brows arching and Kikwang flushes under the sudden attention. ‘I like looking at them’ He trails off and makes to turn over the page. Yoseob stops his with gentle hands.

Hyunseung tunes them out as they start to point at different adverts with excitement. Yoseob giggles at one about a lady with too many bags whilst Kikwang coos over one about two men meeting on a subway train. Hyunseung rolls his eyes. These things never really work out in the end. What are the chances of-

‘HYUNG! YOU GOT ONE. YOU GOT ONE!’

Yoseob’s shout startles them, Hyunseung looking up from his book again. Yoseob is reading one of the last adverts, eyes wide as saucers and mouth hanging open. He’s about to go back to the infuriating puzzle when Yoseob finishes reading and scrambles his hands over the paper. It’s thrust into Hyunseung’s face moments later, Yoseob stabbing at the article with his finger.

'Seung-sshi' @ The Coffee Bean
You: handsome, curly brown hair, caramel latte. Me: A poloshirt, black jeans, staring at you. I was going to buy you another latte but your noisy friend stole you away. Tell me what colour shirt I was wearing.

Hyunseung finds himself in the coffee shop a few mornings later, exactly a week since his encounter with the dark-eyed stranger. He’s sat in a beam of sunshine again, though his hair is straight this week. He stares down at the puzzle, still stuck on that 5 letter word. He scratches his temple, about to give up when a familiar figure settles into the chair opposite him and pushes a mug of steaming coffee across the table top. He looks up to meet a lopsided smile and smouldering dark eyes. ‘Joker'’ Is all the other man offers as he raises his own cup to his lips.
