had a surreal experience today: i met myspace in person. its fascinating how much engineering effort has gone into hustling profiles. dozens of 42U racks, multiple OC-192 fiberlinks.. kcrw.org happens to be there too, but i couldn't find the 'Joe Frank' backup drive. the datacenter is underground in a gorgeous building in downtown LA, ridiculously secured from 8.0+ earthquakes, 28+ day long power outtages, come what may. there's many other server setups in the same room of course... the white noise from hundreds of millions of dollars of equipment churning along has an complex organic hum to it, and the scale of whats happening around you gives that streets of new york/helicopter flyby of skyscrapers and traffic/intel motherboard animation vibe. it was pretty cool.
