the "press for the preliminary heats" sweepstakes continue:
DAY 6:
.................Gold...........Silver...........Bronze..........Total
US................9.................6.................6..................21
AUS..............5.................5.................2..................12
PMC: 6 (4 gold, 2 bronze)
highlights:
- leisel jones took it out strong in the 200 breast but she couldn't hold off amanda beard as she finished strong and outtouched leisel at the wall to take home her first individual olympic gold
-aaron piersol was dominant from the first stroke in the 200 backstroke and the only thing that gave him a scare was when he was disqualified for an illegal final turn. the call was later to be overturned on the account that piersol is just too nice of a guy to take away his hard-earned medal. the coolest part of the whole thing was that marcus rogan, the silver medalist, who would have won the gold medal, didn't celebrate like some would when the news of the disqualification came through, he just went up to piersol and told him not to worry because it'll get protested. what a competitor.
- phelps took it out strong in the butterfly and backstroke legs of the 200 IM, and lost minimal ground in the breastroke going into the final freestyle leg in which he took it home for his 4th gold medal of the meet. ryan lochte took it home in the breastroke and freestyle to take the silver for the united states. george bovell of trinidad and tobago won bronze for the first ever swimming medal for his country
- australian jodie henry, the world record holder, came from behind to take the gold medal from defending champion inge de bruin who had to settle for silver as natalie coughlin snuck in for the bronze medal
coming soon:
- the big dogs face off in the men's 50 free as showman and defending olympic champion gary hall jr. goes against roland schoeman and the world's best
- the 100 fly should be a battle between world record holder ian crocker and the most decorated athelete at the games so far michael phelps as he goes for his 7th medal
- laure manaudou goes for her second gold medal of the meet in the 800 free, but look for americans kalyn keller (klete's sister???) and veteran diana munz challenge for a podium finish
- the women's 200 backstroke should be a tossup, but big names making a run for the medals include coventry, nakamura and buschschulte
the us wins 5 overall medals, including 3 gold, today to take an overwhelming lead over rivals australia who have only 12 against the united states' 12
