[The blankets were soft, warm, and inviting. The morning rays trickled through the shear curtains that hung around a perfect little window. It was a peaceful morning, the birds were singing and…. Wait… blankets? Birds singing ( Read more... )

[There was a slight sad chuckle from Rachel's end.]

Yeah, it's me Numbuh 86. I heard you where here too. Are you okay? What's your status?

I'm alright as ya can be, here. I've been workin' on gettin' the operatives we've got here organized, tryin' to get a few more to increase our ranks. Been a bit slow-goin', though.

Ya talk to the others yet?

Good thinking, Numbuh 86. I've been trying to do the same. It looks like only Sector V, you, and myself are stuck here. I hope it stays that way even though it'll put more pressure on us. I don't want more of our operatives stuck here as well.

Yes, I have spoken to all of them except Numbuh 2.

There's tons of kids here, and school's about to let out, thankfully, so we've got a pretty large recruitin' pool available to us. I've been meanin' to talk to Numbuh One [read: she wasn't] about startin' an actual recruitin' drive.

Also, dunno if they've told ya, but Numbuh Four's apparently buildin' some kind of base-- but, he's an idiot, so I was thinkin' we should take matters into our own hands.

Yes, I've spoken to Numbuh 1 regarding that matter. I have appointed him in charge of recruitment of new cadets. He says that he already has a few candidates and I have one as well that I want him to check out. He's actually your false brother, Selim. He said he was willing to help out in what ever way he could.

[She chuckled slightly.]

Now Numbuh 86, we all have our skills. I told Numbuh 4 that I would like Numbuh 2 to help him in building the new central command base.

Yeah, he seems alright-- for a boy, I mean. He's only six, but he seems like he'll be useful. I've got a few other recruits in mind myself-- Aisling, Dawn, and Tewi. And I'm sure there'll be tons of kids linin' up outside our doors once they hear how cool we are.

I don't think we should leave that moron in charge of anythin' more important than a spoon, but that's just my opinion. I'll... trust your judgment, sir.

Sounds like you both are off to a good start. I want you and Numbuh 1 to work together with the new recruits. I am not sure where we can hold training just yet.

Yes well, that's why I want Numbuh 2 to help him, meaning I want Numbuh 2 to take over with the build and keep Numbuh 4 busy so he doesn't get into any unnecessary trouble.

Understood. I'll scout out a location on my way to school Monday.

Just tell him to go lookin' for somethin' that doesn't really exist. Tell him it's super important to the mission.

... Ya got any questions about this place, sir? It can get pretty crazy, your first day.

Good, report back to me with your findings.

I could do that, but I rather keep him close than have him running around out of sight. Never know what kind of trouble he'll find.

[Rachel sighed heavily.]

Tell me about it. I just noticed all the pictures on the wall of my "family". What is their purpose of bringing us all here?

Dunno, really. It's so weird; they've been pullin' people, kids and adults alike, from different worlds to live in little families... But, ya know what the weirdest part is? [She lowers her voice slightly.] I heard that the dead don't stay dead here. Ya come back the next day, good as new.

[There was a long pause before Rachel spoke again.]

You don't mean like... z-zombies, do you?

[She hadn't considered the threat of an imminent zombie apocalypse. Thanks, Rachel!] ... Dunno, Crimson didn't tell me that much. I think ya end up fine, though, for somebody who's been dead. The drones are more like zombies than anythin'.

Oh, well that is very odd. [She laughs neriously.]

Drones? What are those?

They're people who act like they've always lived here, like Mayfield is the greatest place in the world. The worst part is that they treat ya like you're from here, too! If one more person calls me "Miss Thibodeaux," I'll knock their teeth out...

Calm yourself, Numbuh 86. There will be plently of time for knocking these... drones teeth out. Right now we need to keep our cool and stay below their radar. We're greatly out numbered and we have no weapons. It would be in our best interest to play along for now until we get on our feet. Are we clear?
